Weekend Round-Up, May 5, 2023

If the events calendar is any indication, things are starting to warm up in the Adirondacks.

Looking for ideas on what to do this weekend in the Adirondacks? Here is just a sampling of stuff to do this weekend. For more ideas, visit our Events Page.

Dar Williams brings her unique blend of pop and folk in Lake Placid on Friday night, May 5.

While she’s achieved national and international acclaim, we like to think of Dar Williams as an Upstate NY gal. Currently residing in the Hudson Valley, she has been a presence in the NY music landscape for over 25 years. She was part of the mid-90s Boston scene, inspired by the myriad influences from alt-rockers to Berklee jazz musicians, slam poets, Patty Griffith, and Throwing Muses. In 1994, she was invited by Joan Baez to tour Europe and The United States.

If you haven’t seen her perform before, now is your chance on Friday, May 5th, at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts.

Enjoy First Friday in Saranac Lake and Sip & Savor SLK all weekend long.

The first Friday of every month, Saranac Lake’s Downtown comes alive from 5-8 pm for a monthly celebration of cultural diversity, history, food, business, and arts. Numerous galleries, retail shops, and community spaces will welcome visitors to showcase all the area has to offer.

And all weekend long, Saranac Lake’s restaurants, bars and breweries will continue to tempt patrons with prix fixe menus and beverage specials featuring the finest in SLK cuisine. From now through Sunday, May 7, participating establishments are offering a 3-course, set menu at $20, $30 or $40 and/or drink specials. Get the skinny here.

Celebrating Salamander Saturday in Newcomb.

Once again, the Adirondack Interpretive Center in Newcomb will host their annual celebration of National Salamander Saturday.
Don’t miss your chance to learn more about the Salamander and other amphibians at SUNY ESF’s Adirondack Interpretive Center in Newcomb, NY.

Participants will also visit a vernal pool to look for salamander and frog eggs and delve into the leaf litter to search for the nine species of Salamander that live in the ADK.

Preregistration is required.

In the words of the Foundation for the Conservation of Salamanders, “Keep the World Slimy.”

Champlain Area Trails (“CATs”) Annual Grand Hike

Champlain Area Trails (CATS) is hosting the North Country's annual Grand Hike on Saturday, May 6. This year's hike will be a fabulous, almost 14-mile walk through forests and fields. There will be three "oases" along the hike, which will have snacks, water, and portapotties.

This "rain or shine" hike starts at the North McAuliffe Road Trailhead in Willsboro and ends at Mountain Dog Restaurant & Pub in Westport. At the end of the hike, there will be an "après hike party" featuring live music, drinks, food to purchase, an outdoor games area, and a post-hike celebration.

Hiker registration includes a special gift at check-in and the post-event party. Everyone is welcome for the après hike party, and members of the community are encouraged to attend.

The hike starts at 10 am. Hikers can catch a bus at Ballard Park in Westport to start the hike at the junction of Sunset Road and McAuliffe Road in Willsboro. You can also begin your hike at one of the Oases and catch the shuttle to the party.

Visit CATs website for more information and to register.

Opening Reception for a new exhibit of paintings at Lake George Courthouse Gallery
On Saturday, May 6, 2023, the Lake George Arts Project’s Courthouse Gallery will host a reception for their latest exhibit, “Seeing Through Times,” a collection of paintings by Martin Weinstein.

For a time, Martin Weinstein was an abstract painter until he came to a point of transition while searching for ways of painting that would satisfy his love of the visible world. This search gradually led him to a technique of painting on layered interlocking sheets of clear acrylic panels.

And that’s just a handful of things you can do this weekend in the Adirondacks. Check out our Events section or peruse ADKtaste.com to learn more about all the ADK has to offer.
