Visions of Sudan Before Civil War: A Time and Place Lost at Saranac Lake Free Library
A powerful international photography exhibit is coming to the Adirondacks.
All photos by Denise Silfee.
Visions of Sudan Before Civil War by Denise Silfee will be on display in the Cantwell Room at the Saranac Lake Free Library from February 17 through March 27, 2026.
Through intimate documentary images created between 2015 and 2016, Silfee captures a Sudan that—by her own words—“no longer exists in this way.”
For Adirondack residents and visitors seeking events that expand perspective beyond the Blue Line, this exhibit offers rare and deeply human insight.
The story behind the photographs.
Silfee lived and worked in Sudan from October 2015 to June 2016 as an English Language Fellow—a federally funded professional exchange program for U.S. educators administered through U.S. Embassies. She was only the second—and last—Fellow assigned to Sudan since the program began in 1969.
While there, she provided professional development at Ahfad University for Women, STEPS International K-8 School, and the Sudan National Center for Languages. She organized teacher conferences, led English clubs, and immersed herself in daily life.
Along the way, she documented markets, neighborhoods, classrooms, friendships, and the quiet rhythms of ordinary days.
“These images are really precious to me,” Silfee said. “They are of a place that no longer exists in this way.”
Her time in Sudan later inspired her to earn a graduate degree in journalism from the University of Oregon, focusing on documentary photography and environmental storytelling.
Why this exhibit matters now.
Sudan’s modern political history has been turbulent. Longtime ruler Omar al-Bashir governed from 1989 until 2019, when civilian protests led to his removal. A fragile transitional government followed. Another coup unfolded in 2021. By April 2023, rival military leaders entered open conflict.
Today, the war has displaced approximately 11 million people and fuels what UNICEF has declared the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.
News coverage often reduces crises to numbers. Silfee’s photographs restore faces, streets, friendships, and community spaces to the story.
She recalls meeting friends for dinner, shopping for groceries, and taking neighbors’ children to the park—places now altered or destroyed by conflict.
“I felt welcomed and cared for in Sudan,” she said. “If you can’t make friends in Sudan, you probably just can’t make friends.”
A global story in an Adirondack setting.
This project received support from the Statewide Community Regrants program of the New York State Council on the Arts and is administered locally by the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts.
The exhibit also includes an original artwork piece and personal stories from two Sudanese individuals who worked with Silfee and chose to share how the war has impacted them.
For visitors accustomed to Adirondack stillness and mountain vistas, the Cantwell Room becomes a space of reflection and global connection. It underscores how even small communities in northern New York remain tied to worldwide events.
