Set against the backdrop of the High Peaks near Wilmington and Whiteface Mountain, the annual Wilmington Whiteface Whiskey Run & Festival returns to Preston Festival Field on Saturday, June 20, 2026, blending Adirondack road racing, whiskey culture, and regional history into one of the more distinctive summer events in the Adirondacks.
Part 5K, part 10K, part community festival, the event has become a spirited kickoff to summer in the Whiteface region.
And yes, there is actual whiskey involved.
Hosted by the Wilmington Historical Society, the event raises funds for the organization’s proposed Ruth & Thomas Keegan Memorial History Center — a future community space dedicated to preserving the stories of the Whiteface region through archives, exhibits, lectures, and historical collections.
The result is an Adirondack event that feels equal parts road race, local history lesson, and small-town summer festival.
After all, not every race finishes with bluegrass and bootlegger lore.

A whiskey run with Adirondack roots.
The Whiskey Run is not merely borrowing a catchy name. Wilmington’s connection to whiskey runs surprisingly deep.
During the War of 1812, the region reportedly supplied rye whiskey to American troops during the Battle of Plattsburgh. Later, during Prohibition, Wilmington’s proximity to Canada made it a convenient stop for smugglers moving liquor south across the border. More recently, the town was home to US Barrel, a cooperage that produced whiskey barrels.
That slightly rebellious Adirondack history gives the festival its personality.
It also explains why re-enactors from the Battle of Plattsburgh will once again appear on-site in period clothing with demonstrations and encampments during the festival.
What visitors can expect at the Wilmington Whiskey Festival.
The races begin at 9:30 am at Preston Festival Field, with runners choosing between a 5K and a 10K course through scenic Wilmington. A virtual option is also available for runners participating remotely.
Participants receive a commemorative race shirt, completion medal, and local swag, while top finishers earn awards in men’s and women’s divisions for both race lengths.

But for many attendees, the post-race festival is the real draw.
Beginning at 11 am, the Whiskey Run Festival opens to the public, featuring whiskey tastings, food and craft vendors, raffles, local history displays, and live entertainment. Bluegrass band Moonshine Hollow performs from 1 pm – 4 pm, giving the afternoon the feel of an Adirondack front-porch gathering with slightly better whiskey.
The festival remains free and open to the public, making it accessible even to visitors with zero interest in running 6.2 miles uphill before lunch.
Adirondack race weekends near Lake Placid.
One reason the Whiskey Run continues to grow is its location.
Wilmington sits just outside Lake Placid along the scenic Route 86 corridor leading toward Whiteface Mountain. That places visitors within easy reach of hiking, mountain biking, paddling, fly fishing, breweries, and the broader Tri-Lakes and High Peaks region.
For travelers planning an Adirondack weekend getaway, the race pairs naturally with a stay in Lake Placid, Wilmington, Jay, or Keene.
June is also one of the Adirondacks’ quieter sweet spots before peak summer crowds arrive.
ADK Taste recommendation.
Arrive early and stay late.
Parking fills quickly around Festival Field, and the best way to experience the event is to treat it as a full-day Adirondack outing rather than a quick race stop. Visitors should plan time for the historical demonstrations, local vendors, and bluegrass set after the awards ceremony.
And for anyone running the 10K, the whiskey tastings are probably best enjoyed afterward.
ADK Taste insight.
The beautiful Wilmington region.
Events like the Whiskey Run highlight something the Adirondacks does especially well: blending recreation with regional storytelling.
In Wilmington, the race is not disconnected from place. The history, music, mountain scenery, and community fundraising effort are all tied together in a way that feels distinctly Adirondack — slightly rugged, deeply local, and refreshingly unpolished in the best possible way.
That authenticity is increasingly rare in destination events.
