One person’s 9’ concrete retaining wall is another person’s magnificent canvas.

The North Creek Mosaic Project is the largest piece of public art in the Adirondacks. Over twelve years ago, local artist Kate Hartley (current owner of H’Art Gallery) saw the large concrete wall on Main Street in North Creek as the perfect opportunity to create a magnificent work of art for all to enjoy.

Today, the mosaic’s stunning 200,000 colored tiles depict a variety of Adirondack scenes, including white-water rafting, downhill skiing, fishing, tubing on the Hudson, plus the native flora and fauna of the North Creek area. The mosaic is comprised of four, 60 foot long by 10 foot high panels of tile and glass depicting an ideal early spring day in North Creek.

What we think makes this project extraordinary and special is that the artist made the mural a community project. Students at local schools participated in the making of the mural, along with a boatload of volunteers and even seasonal visitors. Some estimates report that over 2,000 people ultimately contributed to the mural.

North Creek’s Mosaic Project is not hard to find. It’s right on Main Street, directly across from the Ace Hardware Store (256 Main St.), which is, by the way, an outstanding hardware store.
Grab a sandwich or cup of coffee from Izzy’s Deli just down the street and make your way up Main St. to inspect this magnificent work of art.
