Wilmington’s history as a whiskey supplier in the Adirondacks.

In the Adirondack High Peaks, the Wilmington area has a fascinating history involving the production and consumption of alcohol. In the War of 1812, Wilmington provided high-quality rye whiskey to the American troops at the Battle of Plattsburgh as part of their daily ration.

Due to its proximity to Canada during prohibition, Wilmington served as a temporary refuge for bootleggers crossing the border. Additionally, until recently, Wilmington was home to US Barrel, a whiskey barrel cooperage.

In the context of the region’s slightly checkered history and natural beauty, the Wilmington Historical Society invites you to the annual Wilmington Whiteface Whiskey Run and Festival.

The Wilmington Whiteface Whiskey Run and Festival is the primary fundraiser for the Wilmington Historical Society's proposed new Ruth & Thomas Keegan Memorial History Center building. The funds raised by the race will support the construction of a building that will include a reference library, an archives room, and a display/lecture/community space, all aimed at promoting the history of the Whiteface Region. The Wilmington Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization.
