Inside USA Luge: A Lake Placid Tour With a Ride Down the Start Ramp

Lake Placid Luge Tour

Weekly tours offer a look inside the training ramps and sled workshops that help power an American Olympic sport.

Lake Placid offers plenty of opportunities to explore Olympic history.

At USA Luge’s headquarters on Church Street, visitors can see the work that goes into preparing for the next race—and experience a little of the sport themselves.

The organization’s regularly scheduled tours take guests inside its indoor start training facility, through sled-building workshops, and onto a start ramp for a ride. It’s an unusually direct introduction to a sport with deep roots in this Adirondack village.

The appeal extends beyond devoted winter sports fans. For anyone who has watched luge and wondered how athletes get moving, what goes into their equipment, or where they practice, the facility offers a closer look at the preparation behind those remarkably fast runs.

Where the race begins

In luge, the start is a skill athletes train specifically to improve. USA Luge’s Lake Placid facility gives them a place to practice that opening sequence on refrigerated indoor ramps.

The current building was completed in early 2020, replacing a facility whose original ramps dated to 1991. The upgraded layout includes two parallel ramps at four different angles, letting athletes practice starts that reflect the conditions they face in international competition. Longer ramps also give them room to move into their racing position.

For visitors, that makes the tour an introduction to a less visible part of the sport. Television delivers the speed and the finish-line drama. Here, the focus shifts to how a run begins—and the facility built to help athletes get that moment right.

A look inside the sled workshops

The tour also explores the workshops where Olympic-level sleds are manufactured and assembled. These workspaces reveal another side of luge: the equipment and technical preparation that accompany athletic training.

That combination gives the visit its substance. Visitors see both the ramps where athletes practice and the places where their racing equipment takes shape. It’s a working-sport perspective on Lake Placid’s Olympic identity, with something to interest the mechanically curious as well as the sports enthusiast.

Your turn on the ramp

The advertised experience includes a ride down an indoor start ramp. This is the key distinction to understand before booking: the visitor ride takes place at USA Luge’s headquarters, not along the full outdoor competition track. Young children are not eligible for the ride portion.

For eligible visitors, the ride adds a participatory finish to the tour. You can learn about the facility, see the equipment, and then get a brief introduction to the sliding experience yourself.

Ticket purchases also support the organization’s work. USA Luge says proceeds from the program benefit its athletes and programs, connecting a visitor outing with the sport's ongoing development.

Planning your visit

USA Luge’s headquarters is at 57 Church Street in Lake Placid. Tours are advertised for Fridays at 2 pm, with specific dates currently listed through March 26, 2027.

The schedule includes holiday gaps, so check your intended date before making plans. The current Lake Placid listing limits each tour to 25 participants.

USA Luge advises arriving by 1:50 pm and allowing about 1 hour to 1 hour and 20 minutes for the experience.

Visit USA Luge’s Tours and Rides page for registration information and current admission details.

If the registration option does not appear, contact yuliia@usaluge.org or call 518-523-2071 to ask about availability and booking. Families should confirm children’s pricing and ride eligibility before reserving.
