Spare Parts Find New Purpose at Abstract Mechanisms in Saranac Lake

Gears and mechanisms combine to create art works.

Found object art.

Some machines practically announce their purpose. Anastasia Osolin’s sculptures prefer to keep visitors guessing.

On view through November 3, 2026, at the Adirondack Artists Guild in Saranac Lake, Abstract Mechanisms: Assemblages by Anastasia Osolin brings together found-object sculptures that suggest devices built for highly specific—and thoroughly mysterious—jobs.

The exhibition offers an intriguing indoor stop in the Adirondacks for anyone drawn to sculpture, antique machinery, unusual materials, or the possibilities lurking in a box of spare parts. These constructions invite a second look, followed by the inevitable question: What could that possibly do?

Osolin works with manufactured objects that have lost their original usefulness through damage, age, or obsolescence. In her assemblages, those castoffs acquire new relationships and the suggestion of another working life.

Their surfaces matter as much as their shapes. Oxidized metal, stained wood, chipped paint, and softened edges record years of handling and exposure. Rather than erase those marks, Osolin makes them part of the work.

The resulting sculptures resemble imaginary apparatuses assembled from whatever a resourceful inventor could reach. Their apparent purpose remains tantalizingly out of reach. An instruction manual would almost spoil the fun.

Art from found objects.

Visitors who enjoy tracing how individual components fit together will find plenty to consider. So will those interested in how an artist turns an ordinary, overlooked object into something with presence, personality, and a little mystery.

A Saranac Lake artist’s eye for the overlooked.

The Guild’s introduction to Osolin describes a collecting practice that ranges from flea markets and antique shops to objects discovered during walks around Saranac Lake. Her inspirations include science, astronomy, art history, Victorian ephemera, and industrial decay.

That connection gives the exhibition a local dimension without requiring a familiar mountain vista. Here, an Adirondack artist’s surroundings enter the work through objects gathered, noticed, and reconsidered.

The setting adds context. The Adirondack Artists Guild is a cooperative retail gallery representing artists who live and work in the Tri-Lakes region. Its Main Street location places this exhibition within Saranac Lake’s working arts community.

ADK Taste recommendation.

Check the day before heading to Main Street: the gallery has already switched to its seasonal Monday closure, and Sunday hours end at 3 pm. During the visit, spend a little time examining the worn surfaces as well as the overall constructions; those traces of earlier use are central to Osolin’s approach.
