Lake Placid Film Festival Brings Independent Cinema Into Focus

The Lake Placid Film Festival returns November 5–8, 2026

The Lake Placid film festival returns November 5-8, 2026.

Lake Placid’s November itinerary comes with opening credits. The Lake Placid Film Festival returns November 5–8, 2026, bringing international and independent films, short-film showcases, and filmmaking discussions to this Adirondack village.

Presented by Adirondack Film, the festival marks its 25th edition with a gathering for filmmakers and anyone who appreciates a good movie.

The festival’s listed venues include the Palace Theatre on Main Street, Arts Center Lake Placid, and High Peaks Resort. That village setting gives the weekend its particular appeal: cinema shares the itinerary with Lake Placid itself, rather than disappearing inside an anonymous convention complex.

Independent films and fresh voices in Lake Placid.

The announced 2026 program combines international and independent films with short-film showcases, networking opportunities, and panels exploring the journey from an initial idea to distribution.

That mix makes the festival appealing to several kinds of moviegoers. Independent-film enthusiasts can explore work beyond the usual commercial releases, while aspiring filmmakers can approach the weekend as an opportunity to think about how stories reach the screen.

The festival’s “Your Shorts Are Showing” competition recognizes narrative, comedy, documentary, animation, and student shorts. Its awards also include a “Made Upstate” short-film category, giving regional filmmaking a place alongside work arriving from farther afield.

Short-film showcases deserve consideration from attendees who usually gravitate toward features. The format offers a chance to encounter several filmmakers’ approaches in one sitting—and perhaps discover a storyteller whose next project merits following.

ADK Taste insight.

Lake Placid’s film culture has a suitably Adirondack origin story: a blizzard failed to keep the audience home.

In February 1997, more than 300 people attended a Palace Theatre screening of “The Sweet Hereafter,” adapted from a novel by local author Russell Banks. Banks, director Atom Egoyan, and film critic and Lake Placid native Kathleen Carroll participated in the occasion that helped inspire the festival.

The inaugural Lake Placid Film Forum followed in June 2000. Carroll favored the word “forum” because the exchange of ideas mattered alongside the screenings. Today’s combination of films and filmmaking conversations carries that founding idea forward.

Planning a Lake Placid Film Festival visit.

The 2026 festival runs Thursday, November 5, through Sunday, November 8. Attendees should consult the official festival schedule for individual screenings, discussions, locations, and start times.

The festival uses multiple venues, so visitors should check each selection's location before planning their day. The Palace Theatre stands at 2430 Main Street; High Peaks Resort is at 2384 Saranac Avenue; Arts Center Lake Placid is at 17 Algonquin Drive.

ADK Taste recommendation.

Build the itinerary around a film and a filmmaking discussion, then leave room between selections. The confirmed program offers both viewing and conversation; sampling each gives first-time attendees a fuller introduction to the festival than screenings alone.
