Rising House: Dawn Of Adirondack Adventure
Attend a presentation on the history of Rising House, a once-popular Chestertown inn.

Artist and photographer Stevie Latham, along with Town of Chester Historian Donna Lagoy, will present rare photographs and discuss the history of The Rising House, a well-known and popular summer hotel.
Although it has been closed for decades, The Rising House still stands across from the Bull House on Chestertown's Main Street.

Guests arrive at Rising House.
In the early 1800s, two cabins were built in a clearing in the Adirondack woods.
One of these cabins became a humble tavern, which was eventually rebuilt and transformed into the magnificent three-story Rising House hotel by the end of the century.
Chestertown developed around the Rising House, becoming known as a charming, well-kept, and picturesque gateway to exciting Adirondack rejuvenation and adventure.

Lagoy and Latham will share researched photographs and stories about the various transformations of the Rising House—from Victorian opulence to a "large and airy" hotel featuring an Art Deco bar and a "jitterbug" dance room, and finally back to a rustic tavern with chickens and a bull roaming the upstairs.
Now a dusty time capsule trapped in a state of arrested decay, the Rising House still towers over Chestertown, awaiting its next historic chapter.
