Summit of Gore Mountain in North Creek, NY, in the Adirondacks.

Gore Mountain is New York’s largest ski resort.

Watch this once-in-a-lifetime astronomical event and party on the sundeck in the Base Area for free. Gore Mountain is providing a Live DJ, festivities, and Solar Eclipse Glasses giveaways as the moon passes between the Earth and the sun. Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon album will play in the air as this monumental astrological event occurs. Did we mention admission to the party was free?

Eclipse Day lift ticket specials for skiing and riding.

Gore will offer $40 Skiing and snowboarding lift tickets. Free for 2023-24 and 2024-25 Passholders.

Due to a decrease in light and visibility during this event, Gore plans to close ski lifts at 2 pm for the day. The Straightbrook and High Peaks Quad will close at 1:30 pm, and the Northside & Burnt Ridge will close at 1:45 pm.

In addition, lifts will not be open for foot-passenger scenic sky rides. Skiers and riders cannot stay on the mountain after the mountain closes. And please, no uphill hiking.

Keep your eyes protected during the eclipse.

Eye safety should be at the top of everyone’s priority list on April 8, 2024. Gore will provide free eclipse glasses, only while supplies last.

During a solar eclipse, looking at the sun directly is dangerous, except during the brief period of totality when the moon fully covers the sun - and even then, experts say caution should be exercised.

  • Wearing sunglasses alone will NOT provide sufficient protection for your eyes.

  • Staring at the sun without proper eye protection can lead to temporary or permanent damage to your eyes, known as "eclipse blindness."

  • One of the best ways to view a solar eclipse is through indirect viewing using a pinhole projector (see instructional video below). This easy-to-make device projects an image made through a pinhole using an average cardboard container, like a cereal or shoe box.

  • Another way to view a solar eclipse without harming your eyes is by using the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses from a trusted source.

  • Further information about safe viewing, including a list of eclipse glasses suppliers, is available on the American Astronomical Society website.

  • Viewing any part of the bright sun through a camera lens, binoculars, or a telescope without a special-purpose solar filter secured over the front of the optics will instantly cause severe eye injury.
