Tannery Pond Center’s Widlund Gallery presents: Down by the River by Andy Mitchell
Visit the Widlund Gallery in North Creek, near Gore Mountain, to see the exhibit by Andy Mitchell, showcasing a recent collection of paintings.
Much of the work leans into abstraction, often using bright colors, simple geometry, and fragments of human figures or street scenes. Mitchell explains that some are based on observation, while others come from memory or imagination. They don’t follow a system or theory. They’re just what came out.
According to the artist, the exhibit’s title, Down by the River, originated from a couple of places.
He used to live in a van (inspired by a book he read called “Walden on Wheels” by Ken Ilgunas) for about two years while attending the Fashion Institute of Technology, and people would constantly quote the Chris Farley sketch at him — “living in a van down by the river.”
About the artist.
Andy Mitchell is an artist and muralist originally from Elizabethtown, NY. He has spent time in New York City and Savannah, GA, where he began selling paintings in Forsyth Park.
His artistic style is diverse; some of his pieces depict strangers and friends, along with detailed street scenes from places he has visited. Other works are more aesthetic and abstract, using vibrant colors and multiple light sources. In the past year, he has completed two large-scale murals, which are his most significant projects to date.
Andy has held solo exhibitions in Savannah, GA; Clifton Park, NY; Whallonsburg, NY; and, most recently, in Saranac Lake, NY.
