Declaration of Independence Reading at Fort William Henry
The Declaration of Independence will be read aloud at Fort William Henry on Lake George’s southern shores.
On a historic day, July 4, 1776, the 56 delegates at the Second Continental Congress unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence.
They gathered at the Pennsylvania State House, which later became known as Independence Hall, in Philadelphia, the capital of the colonies at the time.
These delegates made a profound statement to the world that continues to resonate throughout modern history.
Benjamin Franklin collaborated with Thomas Jefferson and John Adams to draft the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
To commemorate this event, Fort William Henry in Lake George Village hosts live readings of the Declaration of Independence over the July 4 holiday weekend at 1 pm on July 4, 5 and 6.
For more information, visit the Fort William Henry Museum website.
About the Declaration of Independence.
Thomas Jefferson was primarily responsible for drafting the text of the Declaration, with significant contributions from Benjamin Franklin and John Adams.
If you’ve never read the full text (it only takes between five and 10 minutes) or if it’s been a while since your high school American History class, we humbly suggest you take a look at it now, and become acquainted with or reminded of the things our forefathers championed: that our rights come from rationality and the consent of the governed, and not the dogma the irrational or despotic forces.
