Seagle Festival Brings Leonard Bernstein to Keene Valley

Leonard Bernstein composing music.

Leonard Bernstein composed some of the world’s most cherished music.

Broadway favorites meet the High Peaks.

The music of Leonard Bernstein comes to the heart of the High Peaks when Seagle Festival presents Life is Happiness Indeed: The Music of Leonard Bernstein at Keene Valley Congregational Church on Sunday, September 6 at 4 pm.

The afternoon concert features Seagle Festival's Fall Artists performing selections from West Side Story, Candide, Trouble in Tahiti, On the Town, and other works by one of America's most celebrated composers.

Presented by East Branch Friends of the Arts, the program has an unusual range. Bernstein could be sophisticated one moment and exuberantly theatrical the next, moving between classical music, jazz and Broadway without losing the emotional immediacy that made songs from West Side Story and On the Town American standards.

Live music in the Adirondacks.

The Keene Valley performance is part of Seagle Festival's tour of Life is Happiness Indeed, bringing the company's emerging professional artists from its Schroon Lake home to communities around the Adirondacks.

For travelers exploring Keene Valley, Keene, Lake Placid, and the surrounding High Peaks, the 4 pm curtain makes this an especially easy addition to a September Sunday. It also offers hikers a rather more civilized conclusion to the day than another granola bar in the car.

ADK Taste recommendation.

The High Peaks can remain busy on September weekends, so allow extra driving time and arrive in Keene Valley well ahead of the performance. Better still, plan lunch nearby and make the concert the centerpiece of an unhurried afternoon.

The concert is an excellent choice for couples, theater enthusiasts, classical music fans, and anyone looking to add a memorable cultural experience to an Adirondack getaway.
