Northern Current Brings a World of Music to Saranac Lake
Northern Current at Riverside Park in Saranac Lake over Labor Day Weekend.
Labor Day Weekend in the Adirondacks gets an unusually good soundtrack when the Northern Current Music Festival returns to Riverside Park in Saranac Lake on Sunday, September 6.
The free, all-day outdoor music festival brings Afro-soul, reggae, Americana, psychedelic funk, jazz and gloriously unruly country rock to the shore of Lake Flower from 12 pm – 10 pm.
Northern Current is less a single-genre music festival than a well-curated musical wander. Add local food vendors, a dedicated Kids Zone and interactive projections after dark, and it becomes the kind of event where arriving for one band can easily turn into staying for six.

Meet The Psycodelics, Northern Current’s Bonnaroo-tested funk band.
The Psycodelics mix vintage soul, psychedelic rock and funk into a high-energy live show. The Charleston-based band has been steadily building a national audience, including a 2025 appearance at Bonnaroo — an impressive booking for a free community festival in Saranac Lake.
The band’s blend of soul, funk and psychedelic rock makes much more sense once they start playing. This live Sugarshack Sessions set offers a preview of the musicianship — and energy — they’ll bring to Riverside Park.

And The Psycodelics are only one reason Northern Current’s 2026 lineup punches above the weight of a free community festival.
The 2026 lineup stretches well beyond the usual festival circuit.
Double Tiger, the reggae and dub project of producer and multi-instrumentalist Jay Spaker, brings roots reggae, dancehall and sound-system heft. His résumé includes work with John Brown’s Body and Dub-Stuy Records.
Upstate New York favorite Driftwood brings its blend of Americana, folk, bluegrass and rock, driven by harmonies and deeply rooted songwriting.
Then there is Jembaa Groove, a seven-piece Afro-soul and Afro-jazz band co-founded by German bassist and producer Yannick Nolting and Ghanaian singer and percussionist Eric Owusu.
The group blends West African Highlife and Wassoulou traditions with Berlin’s jazz and soul scene. Translation for festivalgoers: standing perfectly still may prove difficult.
And from central Pennsylvania comes Ma’am, which mangles outlaw-flavored alt-country with garage rock, Memphis-style horns, thunderous drums and overdriven guitars. The band calls its sound “country junk,” which may be considerably more useful than trying to file it neatly into a genre.
Northern Current provides a perfect excuse to shake your rump roast Labor Day weekend.
Saranac Lake musicians get their turn.
Northern Current’s globe-trotting musical tastes don’t mean it overlooks the home team.
The Sven Curth (huge) Trio brings jazz, improvisation and a certain cheerful disregard for what the word “trio” ought to mean.
The Allens, featuring familiar faces from the North Country music community, lean into folk and Americana with original songwriting and hometown roots.
Food, kids and an Adirondack park after dark.
Local food vendors will be serving throughout the day, making it easy to settle into Riverside Park for the long haul rather than disappearing between sets.
Families have another good reason to stay. Play ADK hosts the Kids Zone with a Lego Car Derby, Imagination Playground, crafts, bubbles and other hands-on activities.
As daylight fades over Lake Flower, The Station will add interactive visual projections, turning the park into a multimedia backdrop for the festival’s final hours.
And Adirondack weather does not get veto power. Northern Current happens rain or shine, with a large tent providing cover if September decides to show some personality.

Treat Northern Current as an all-day festival rather than a concert with a single headliner. Arrive early enough to hear unfamiliar acts, grab food before the evening crowds settle in and stay after sunset for the projections. Families should build in time for the Play ADK Kids Zone rather than attempting the classic parental maneuver known as “we’ll stop on the way out.”
