Home can mean a room, a landscape, or an entire country.

Opening November 7 at The Hyde Collection in Glens Falls, The Scandinavian Home: Landscape and Lore explores those overlapping ideas through art and decorative objects.

For Adirondack residents and travelers, the exhibition offers a winter museum outing with a subject that extends well beyond attractive interiors.

On view through February 28, 2027, in the Charles R. Wood Gallery, the exhibition brings together approximately fifty paintings, works on paper, metalwork, ceramics, and decorative objects dating from 1880 to 1920. The Frick Pittsburgh organized the exhibition, which examines art and material culture from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland.

The exhibition considers how artists and craftspeople expressed belonging through both landscapes and objects made for domestic life. A painting and a carefully fashioned household object offer different ways to explore the same question: What makes a place feel like home?

That range gives the show particular appeal for visitors interested in decorative arts, cultural history, and the relationship between people and place. There is more here to consider than what belongs above the sofa.

Opening day in Glens Falls.

On Saturday, November 7, The Hyde hosts an Exhibition Talk & Tour from 11 am – 12:30 pm. Collector Dr. David Werner will discuss the objects’ historical context and share personal reflections on collecting Scandinavian art.

An exhibition walkthrough with co-curator Patricia Berman follows the talk. Berman, a professor of art at Wellesley College, specializes in turn-of-the-century European art, particularly Scandinavian art.

The museum lists the program as part of museum admission, with free admission for members, and provides an online registration link. Visitors interested in attending should check availability and register through The Hyde.
