Winter was approaching, and the British Army had decisions to make.

On Saturday, November 7, 2026, The British Army Arrives brings living historians to Crown Point State Historic Site for a free Revolutionary War re-enactment on the Adirondacks’ Lake Champlain shore.

The program revisits the military calculations of 1776, when the prospect of another northern winter sharpened questions about what should happen next.

Visitors can watch interpreters portray British soldiers drilling and assessing conditions at Crown Point, and hear the words of General Guy Carleton written 250 years ago.

For anyone whose history lessons ended with memorizing dates, this offers a more tangible encounter: soldiers, a strategic location, and a campaigning season running out of time.

Living history at Crown Point.

The encampment centers on the British Army’s arrival during the Revolutionary War’s 1776 campaign. Rather than treating the Revolution as a finished story with an inevitable outcome, the program asks visitors to consider the choices confronting military leaders at that moment.

Drill demonstrations reveal the organized work behind an army’s movements. Carleton’s words add another dimension, connecting the physical portrayal of military life with the thinking of the commander directing it.

The event should particularly appeal to Revolutionary War enthusiasts, readers of regional history, and visitors who enjoy watching historical interpretation unfold in a place connected to the original events. The announced activities emphasize observation and listening; visitors should not assume that a battle reenactment forms part of the program.

Champlain Valley settlers enter the story.

The event organizers offer a 2 pm panel discussion and presentation featuring staff from Crown Point State Historic Site, Chimney Point State Historic Site, and the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum.

Its subject broadens the day beyond military strategy: Champlain Valley settlers and the ways the campaigns of 1776 changed their lives. That is a compelling complement to the encampment. An army’s decisions affected people whose homes and livelihoods occupied the same contested landscape.

The announcement schedules the Friends of Crown Point State Historic Site’s annual meeting at 1 pm in the theater room. The public may attend, and anyone interested in joining the Friends has an opportunity to learn more. Visitors planning around either afternoon session should confirm the schedule with the site before traveling.

ADK Taste insight.

Crown Point’s location helps explain why armies cared so much about it. The peninsula occupied a strategic position along the corridor between Albany and Montreal, making this stretch of Lake Champlain consequential territory.

Today’s historic site preserves the remains of French and British fortifications. Those surroundings give the encampment its particular value: the landscape helps explain the history, rather than simply providing scenery behind it.

ADK Taste recommendation.

Plan around the 2 pm settlers presentation (check the event schedule to confirm times). Pairing that discussion with time observing the military encampment offers two perspectives on the same campaign: those making strategic decisions and those living with the consequences.

Wear warm layers and practical walking shoes for the outdoor portion. Hours are 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, with free admission, at 21 Grandview Drive, Crown Point, NY.
