Renowned Cellist Clarice Jensen Comes to The Mill in Westport

The Mill in Westport, NY, celebrates the release of Clarice Jensen’s extraordinary new album: In holiday clothing, out of the great darkness.

In this album, Jensen demonstrates how the past and present can merge in powerful, emotionally charged ways. She highlights the interplay between Bach’s traditional styles and the modern age of electronics, creating an arresting combination. NPR’s Tom Huizenga elaborates on this in his review on “All Things Considered.”

Clarice Jensen: Juilliard trained cellist.

Clarice Jensen is a composer and cellist based in New York, holding both BM and MM degrees from the Juilliard School. As a solo artist, Jensen has cultivated a unique compositional style, improvising and layering her cello through shifting loops and a range of electronic effects. This approach allows her to explore rich, drone-based soundscapes.

Jensen’s music is pulsing, visceral, and vibrant, offering a deeply immersive experience. Jensen's work is characterized by a remarkable sense of restraint and an almost hallucinatory clarity. While mediative, it also possesses a sculptural sharpness and rigor that distinguishes it from the typical New Age and DIY drone music. She has succeeded in crafting a precise and exquisite vision.

Her music has been described by Self-Titled as “heavily processed, incredibly powerful neo-classical pieces that seem to come straight from another astral plane”; by Boomkat as “languorously void-touching ideas, scaling and sustaining a sublime tension”; whilst Bandcamp remarked upon “a kaleidoscope of pulsing movement rich in acoustic beating and charged with other psychoacoustic effects, constantly shifting in density and viscous timbre.”
