The Phantom of the Opera Brings Silent-Film Chills to View Arts Center in Old Forge

Staging for Phantom of the Opera

View Arts Center in Old Forge brings a century-old nightmare to the Adirondacks when it screens The Phantom of the Opera (1925) in Gould Hall on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.

Part of View’s Halloweek Spooktacular, the free movie night runs from 7 pm – 9 pm, with free popcorn and a cash bar. Paris supplies the catacombs; Old Forge supplies the gathering place.

For anyone exploring movies in the Adirondacks, this screening offers a chance to rediscover horror before spoken dialogue became standard. View explicitly notes that this is the silent film, rather than the stage musical: expect Lon Chaney’s extraordinary physical performance and Gothic atmosphere.

A voice from beneath the opera house.

Beneath the Paris Opera House, a mysterious masked figure becomes obsessed with young singer, Christine Daaé. His efforts to advance her career grow increasingly threatening, drawing Christine and her admirer, Raoul, into a world of secret passages, backstage intrigue, and dangerous demands.

Adapted from Gaston Leroux’s novel, The Phantom of the Opera explores desire, loneliness, and the point at which devotion becomes possession. Its suspense depends as much on what lurks beyond the frame as on what appears within it.

A preview of the silent-era Gothic spectacle and Lon Chaney’s masked Phantom.

The man behind the mask.

Rupert Julian directed the film, with Mary Philbin as Christine, Norman Kerry as Raoul, and Chaney as the Phantom. Chaney devised his own startling makeup, making his face one of silent cinema’s most enduring special effects.

Universal also invested heavily in the opera-house setting. The American Film Institute documents elaborate sets developed using architectural plans of the Paris Opera House. That scale rewards theatrical viewing: faces, shadows, and cavernous spaces command attention differently when they fill a shared screen.

A classic with some creaking floorboards.

The film’s strongest asset remains Chaney. The Museum of Modern Art credits his makeup, costuming, and performance with helping make this adaptation especially memorable. Roger Ebert’s assessment offers a useful counterweight: the spectacle impresses more consistently than the story’s depth or subtlety.

Modern viewers may find the acting heightened and the storytelling deliberate. Those qualities also invite a different rhythm of watching. The film entered the National Film Registry in 1998, a preservation honor that recognizes its lasting significance rather than an awards-season victory.

An Old Forge evening worth making time for.

Small-town movie theaters and community arts venues give movies in the Adirondacks a sense of occasion. At View, this screening places a landmark film within Old Forge’s broader cultural life, inviting neighbors and visitors to settle into the same strange, shadowy world.

Check View’s event page or Facebook page before traveling for updates and any admission instructions. View is at 3273 State Route 28. Anyone visiting the cash bar should drink responsibly.

ADK Taste recommendation: A strong choice for classic-horror fans and silent-film newcomers willing to let atmosphere set the pace.
