Garnet Studio
Gore Mountain is recognized world-wide for being the source of outstanding garnets. This gemstone is revered for its beautiful colors and durability. Garnet is the traditional January birthstone and has inspired many legends and associations with love, friendship, light, and vitality.
What does that have to do with the ADK? Plenty.
Garnet is New York State’s official gemstone.
The largest garnet mine in the world is located near North Creek, New York and is operated by Barton Mines Corporation, which supplies about 90% of the world's garnet.
The open-pit Barton Garnet Mine, located at Gore Mountain in the Adirondacks, yields the world's largest single crystals of garnet; diameters range from 5 to 35 cm and commonly average 10–18 cm.
Which brings us to Garnet Studio, overlooking Gore Mountain amid the finest garnet deposits in the Adirondack mountains. They offer a full range of custom-cut stones and jewelry using locally-mined Garnet, 14K gold and silver.
We happened upon Garnet Studio during a visit to, you guessed it, Garnet Hill Lodge. Our ADK meemaw has a fondness for garnet and asked, nay demanded, that we stop when she saw Garnet Studio’s sign.
They specialize in Adirondack Garnet, offering a large variety of jewelry – rings, necklaces, earrings, bracelets featuring Adirondack Garnet and gems from all over the world, such as sapphires, tourmaline and other precious and semi-precious stones.
The proprietors, Joe and Judy Brown, have deep roots in the area and are passionate about their craft. Their knowledge of Adirondack Garnet is surpassed by none.
Garnet Studio is open year-round, Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Anytime by appointment – please call 518-251-3368 and let them know you’re coming!
