Silver Bay’s Mountain Music Festival Finds the Right Rhythm for Lake George

This year, Silver Bay’s Mountain Music Festival, September 11–13, brings bluegrass, folk, roots, and Americana to the historic Silver Bay YMCA campus on northern Lake George — and makes a compelling case for adding live music to the region’s increasingly interesting shoulder season.
The festival is only part of the story. Silver Bay, a 700-acre campus with roots stretching back to 1902, is finding ways to introduce a new generation of visitors to a place long known for family vacations, retreats, conferences, and summers by the lake.
Mountain music, it turns out, may be a particularly good fit.

Silver Bay’s approach feels different.
Rather than building the weekend around a giant stage and a field full of spectators, the Mountain Music Festival spreads intimate performances across Silver Bay’s historic campus. Concerts take place in sheltered venues, allowing musicians and audiences to stay close — and removing September weather from its starring role in everyone's weekend plans.

Denver-based Magoo pushes bluegrass in progressive directions, while SUSTO Stringband works across folk, bluegrass, and Americana. Central Pennsylvania’s Big Sky Quartet brings an award-winning folk and roots sound to the weekend.
Then there is Brooklyn-based Damn Tall Buildings, a band known for bringing considerable energy to the intersection of bluegrass, folk, and contemporary songwriting.
The mountain lineage becomes more literal with The Wildmans, a brother-and-sister duo from Floyd, Virginia, steeped in Appalachian traditions but hardly trapped by them. Amy Gallatin & Stillwaters bring country and bluegrass roots and Gallatin's soulful vocals, while The Bunker Boys supply the weekend with a decidedly rollicking streak.
It is a lineup built for listeners rather than genre purists — probably a wise decision for a festival hoping to become an Adirondack September tradition.
Silver Bay gives the music a sense of place.
Plenty of venues could assemble a bluegrass lineup. Far fewer can put it beside one of the quieter stretches of Lake George.
Silver Bay sits well north of the bustle of Lake George Village, between Hague and Ticonderoga, on a part of the lake where the mountains close in and the landscape feels distinctly different. That geography matters.
So does the campus itself. More than a century of Adirondack summers has given Silver Bay the accumulated character that cannot be manufactured for a festival weekend. Historic buildings, porches, footpaths, cottages, gathering spaces, and the waterfront all become part of the event.
And because guests can book cottages and hotel-style accommodations onsite, the festival can become a weekend rather than a concert itinerary.
No late-night drive down Route 9N required. That alone deserves an encore.
