For the Birds Takes Flight at Tannery Pond Center

The yellow rumped warbler is one of the more than 300 avian species inhabit or migrate through the Adirondack Park each year.

For bird lovers, nature enthusiasts, artists, and curious travelers alike, For the Birds at Tannery Pond Center in North Creek offers a distinctly Adirondack way to spend a June weekend.

Taking place June 12-13 at Tannery Pond Center, this multi-faceted event blends art exhibition, hands-on workshops, wildlife education, and film into a celebration of the feathered creatures that help define life in the Adirondacks.

Located in the heart of the Gore Mountain region, Tannery Pond Center has long served as a cultural gathering place for residents and visitors. For this special event, birds take center stage through a lineup that appeals equally to aspiring artists, backyard birdwatchers, families, and seasoned naturalists.

The festivities begin Friday evening with a fundraiser Sip & Paint workshop led by artist Patrice Jarvis-Weber. Participants will create a vibrant loon painting in acrylics while learning color mixing and layering techniques. Refreshments add to the relaxed atmosphere, making it an enjoyable way to start the weekend.

Adirondack bird art takes the spotlight.

The celebration extends beyond a single weekend thanks to a month-long bird-themed exhibition in the Tannery Pond Center lobby running June 2-27.

Visitors will find an impressive collection of bird-inspired artwork from Tim Sauter's whimsical gourd creations, Ken Raiser's meticulously carved birds, and Jill Swinton's photography. Additional photographs by Dean Bouton round out the exhibit.

Together, the collection captures both the artistry and diversity of birdlife that residents and visitors encounter throughout the Adirondacks. Whether it's the unmistakable silhouette of a loon or the brilliant flash of a songbird in spring, the exhibition offers plenty to admire.

Hands-on Adirondack wildlife workshops.

Saturday morning shifts from observation to participation with a free birdhouse-building workshop. Participants will construct nest boxes designed specifically for Eastern Bluebirds while learning how thoughtful design choices can support local wildlife.

It's the kind of hands-on experience that feels especially fitting in the Adirondacks, where many visitors arrive seeking a deeper connection with nature rather than simply viewing it from afar.

Throughout the afternoon, members of the Southern Adirondack Audubon Society will host an information table featuring some of the organization's latest initiatives. Visitors can learn about the new bird tracking tower in the Washington County Grasslands, discover native plants that attract birds and pollinators, and explore opportunities for free bird walks and educational programs.

The wild side of bird romance.

One of the weekend's most entertaining programs arrives Saturday afternoon with "Bird Rockstars: The Wild World of Bird Courtship."

Dr. Samantha Carouso-Peck will explore the surprising lengths birds go to in pursuit of love. From elaborate dances and acrobatic displays to extravagant nest construction and unusual mating rituals, the presentation reveals that nature often rivals Broadway when it comes to spectacle.

The talk includes a question-and-answer session, giving attendees the opportunity to dive deeper into some of the natural world's most fascinating behaviors.

A beloved birding movie closes the day.

The celebration concludes with a screening of The Big Year, the popular birding comedy starring Steve Martin, Jack Black, and Owen Wilson.

The comedy “The Big Year” rounds at Tannery Pond Center’s “For The Birds” event.

While the film follows three competitive birders as they chase an ambitious species-counting goal across North America, its themes of adventure, friendship, and personal discovery resonate with anyone who has spent time exploring the outdoors.

ADK Taste recommendation.

Arrive early on Saturday and plan to stay for multiple programs. The birdhouse workshop, Audubon information table, afternoon presentation, and evening film create a natural progression that turns a quick stop into a full day of Adirondack-inspired learning and entertainment.

Why birding matters in the Adirondacks.

Birding continues to grow in popularity across the Adirondacks, where habitats range from mountain summits and boreal forests to wetlands and lakeshores. Events like For the Birds offer an accessible introduction to that world while highlighting the important conservation work taking place throughout the region.

For travelers exploring North Creek, Gore Mountain, Johnsburg, or nearby communities, the event provides a unique combination of art, culture, and nature rarely found in a single weekend program.

For reservations, workshop registration, and updates, visitors should contact Tannery Pond Center directly or visit its official website and social media channels.
