Fort Ticonderoga Recreates the Stand That Stopped a British Advance

Independence was hardly a settled matter in October 1776. On October 24–25, 2026, Fort Ticonderoga in Ticonderoga, NY, revisits that precarious autumn with Hold the Line for Liberty, a two-day battle reenactment on the Adirondacks’ Lake Champlain shore.

Part of the fort’s REAL TIME REVOLUTION® programming, the event marks the 250th anniversary of an American stand that persuaded British forces to abandon their advance south. Visitors will follow the story across encampments, fortifications, and waterfront positions, with different reenactments scheduled each day.

Why Ticonderoga mattered in October 1776.

Earlier that month, Benedict Arnold’s outnumbered fleet had challenged British naval forces at the Battle of Valcour Island. The Americans suffered heavy losses, but their resistance helped delay the British advance along Lake Champlain.

At Ticonderoga, approximately 13,000 Continental Army troops waited behind defenses built over months of preparation. Soldiers had constructed fortifications, mounted cannon, and helped build the fleet defending this strategically important waterway.

The British ultimately withdrew north rather than attack the American position. On October 28, 1776—the same day Washington’s army lost the Battle of White Plains—American forces at Ticonderoga held their ground. Here, success meant making an attack look sufficiently unappealing.

Saturday’s program builds from warning to mobilization. At 11 am, “The Alarm” depicts news reaching headquarters and an alarm gun calling the army into action.

A 12:30 pm battle briefing precedes a 12:45 pm fife and drum parade to the Liberty Hill encampment. At 1 pm, reenactors portray soldiers forming up and marching to their defenses. At 2 pm, the action shifts to the recreated redoubt, where American cannon confront approaching British gunboats.

Sunday brings another vantage point. At 11 am, “The Channel at the New Jersey Redoubt” places visitors beside Lake Champlain near the historic American firing position. At 1 pm, “The Enemy Retired” portrays British scouts withdrawing under American pressure.

The weekend particularly suits military-history enthusiasts and visitors interested in how terrain, preparation, and decision-making shaped the Revolution. The setting does considerable explanatory work: Lake Champlain was the route an advancing army needed to control.

ADK Taste recommendation.

Make time for the 12:30 pm battle briefing before the afternoon reenactment on either day. It supplies the people, landmarks, and historical sequence that make the action easier to follow.

For Sunday’s 11 am waterfront program, use the visitor-schedule map and follow staff directions to its designated parking area.
