The Handlebarley Gravel Weekend, September 12–13, brings two days of mixed-surface cycling to Paradox Brewery in North Hudson, New York, pairing some of the southern Adirondacks’ best backroads with craft beer, local history and a well-earned post-ride feast. Presented by Bike Adirondacks and Paradox Brewery, the fall cycling event lets riders tackle Saturday or Sunday, or settle in for the full weekend.

Saturday serves up the main course: a 43-mile ride followed by pizza, salad, live music and a pint of Paradox beer. After miles of gravel crunching beneath the tires and September scenery rolling past, that first cold beer may qualify as a recovery beverage.

Gravel cycling through the southern Adirondacks.

Saturday’s classic Handlebarley route heads east from North Hudson toward Ironville and Moriah, mixing paved and gravel backroads through a part of the Adirondacks that rewards anyone willing to venture beyond the better-known highways.

Two stocked rest stops break up the 43-mile ride. One brings cyclists to Penfield Homestead Museum in Ironville, while another stops at Hunter Way Farm in Moriah before the route loops back toward Paradox Brewery.

Riders receive full support along the way, with food, water and SAG assistance designed to make the challenging terrain considerably more civilized.

Wondering what gravel cycling in the Adirondacks actually looks like? This Handlebarley Gravel Weekend video offers a rider’s-eye glimpse of the mixed-surface roads, forested scenery and rolling terrain that make BikeADK’s North Hudson event a fall favorite.

Handlebarley Gravel Weekend takes cyclists across paved and gravel backroads in the southern Adirondacks, with Paradox Brewery in North Hudson serving as the weekend’s home base.

The September cycling event combines Adirondack gravel riding, mountain scenery and stops in communities including North Hudson, Ironville and Moriah.

A ride through Adirondack history.

Handlebarley also pedals into an intriguing chapter of Adirondack history. A portion of event proceeds benefits the Penfield Homestead Museum, known as the “Birthplace of the Electrical Age.”

The museum encompasses a collection of 19th-century buildings and grounds, including the home of Allen Penfield, farm barns, and a church and parsonage dating to the 1840s. It turns Saturday’s rest stop into something more memorable than a quick banana-and-water break.

Sunday cycling to Boreas Ponds.

Sunday changes the pace with a mid-morning out-and-back ride to Boreas Ponds, one of the Adirondacks’ great scenic destinations. The approximately 30-mile ride offers another day of supported cycling before everyone reconvenes at Paradox Brewery for a casual post-ride gathering.

Riders can register for either day individually. Those choosing the full weekend receive everything included in both rides plus a Paradox Brewery cycling jersey.

Beer, pizza and a proper finish at Paradox Brewery.

Saturday’s post-ride party begins at 1 pm, with live music from 1–3 pm. Registration includes a pizza-and-salad feast and one Paradox craft beer, making the brewery more than simply the starting line.

Sunday riders also receive a beer following the Boreas Ponds ride. Both days include an event gift.

Participation is capped at 150 riders, keeping the weekend relatively intimate by cycling-event standards.

Pizza and beer. You earned it.

ADK Taste recommendation.

Make it a weekend rather than a dash in and out. North Hudson sits within easy reach of Schroon Lake and some spectacular southern Adirondack scenery, and the two-day format offers very different rides. Riders staying over can also check the event’s lodging information for a special offer from The Lodge at Schroon Lake, ADK Taste’s official lodging partner for the southern Adirondacks.
