Loon Zoom: Favorite Loon Stories

For anyone who has ever paused mid-paddle to listen to the eerie, unforgettable call of a loon echo across an Adirondack lake, Loon Zoom: Our Favorite Loon Stories promises an evening of wonder, insight, and pure joy.
This virtual education event, hosted by the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation (ACLC), takes place on March 19 from 7 to 8 pm and offers a heartwarming, image-rich celebration of one of the Adirondacks’ most beloved birds.
Designed to entertain as much as it educates, this Loon Zoom invites viewers into the intimate world of common loons through powerful storytelling, striking photography, and engaging video.

Nesting loon.
Common loons are deeply woven into the Adirondack experience. Their presence signals clean water, healthy fish populations, and intact lake ecosystems. While many Adirondack residents and visitors know loons by sound and silhouette, fewer have seen the full range of behaviors that define their lives.
This special presentation, “Our Favorite Loon Stories II,” builds on a popular 2024–2025 Loon Zoom and showcases even more dramatic imagery and video footage. It’s an opportunity to see loons up close—courtship rituals, parenting moments, territorial displays, and unexpected behaviors—captured through decades of dedicated observation.
Meet the presenters.
The program is led by Daniel Poleschook and Ginger Poleschook, who have studied and researched common loons in northeastern Washington since 1995. Their long-term work offers rare insight into loon behavior and life cycles, informed by years of patience, fieldwork, and a deep respect for the species.
Rather than focusing strictly on data and statistics, this Loon Zoom leans into storytelling—sharing memorable moments and meaningful encounters that reveal the personality, resilience, and vulnerability of loons.
About the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation
The Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation is dedicated to protecting loons and the freshwater habitats they depend on throughout the Adirondack Park. Through research, monitoring, education, and advocacy, ACLC works with lake associations, volunteers, and conservation partners to reduce threats to loons, safeguard nesting sites, and promote responsible lake stewardship.
The Loon Zoom series reflects ACLC’s mission to connect people with loons through accessible, engaging education—helping audiences understand why these birds matter and how their survival is tied to the health of Adirondack lakes.

Why this Loon Zoom matters to the Adirondacks.
Although the Poleschooks’ research is based in the Pacific Northwest, the stories they share resonate deeply with Adirondack audiences. Loon behavior is remarkably consistent across regions, and the challenges loons face—human disturbance, habitat pressure, and environmental change—mirror those seen on Adirondack waters.
By fostering emotional connections through storytelling, this program underscores the importance of loon conservation in the Adirondacks. When people understand loons as individuals with complex lives, they’re more likely to support the actions needed to protect them locally.
