If you believe the holidays are better with a bit of music, a little mayhem, and at least one wisecracking frog, you’re in luck. “The Muppet Christmas Carol” will be shown Tuesday, December 30, 2025, from 2–4 pm at Tannery Pond Center in North Creek, and best of all—it’s free.
Presented by Tannery Pond Center in partnership with the Town of Johnsburg Library, this family-friendly screening is a cozy way to wind down the holiday season. Light refreshments will be served, and the event is open to all ages. (For more information, call 518-251-2505.)
A holiday classic that still shines.
Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol has been adapted countless times, but few versions manage to be both reverent and ridiculous in equal measure. Released in 1992, The Muppet Christmas Carol does precisely that—honoring the heart of Dickens’ story while letting the Muppets do what they do best: sneak jokes in sideways and sing their way through serious moments.
In this beloved adaptation, Kermit the Frog stars as the long-suffering Bob Cratchit, employee of the notoriously tightfisted Ebenezer Scrooge, played—against all expectations and to great effect—by Michael Caine. As Scrooge is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come, the familiar Muppet ensemble weaves in and out of the story, including Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, and Sam the Eagle.
Gonzo, memorably, serves as Charles Dickens himself, narrating the tale with help from his loyal sidekick Rizzo the Rat, giving the film one foot firmly planted in the original text and the other in pure Muppet chaos.
A performance that anchors the mayhem
One reason this film has aged so well is Michael Caine’s performance. He plays Scrooge completely straight—no winks, no irony—which gives the Muppets space to orbit around him. The result is surprisingly moving.
Film critic Roger Ebert famously praised the choice, writing that Caine “plays Scrooge as if he were acting with the Royal Shakespeare Company,” adding that this seriousness “makes the Muppets funnier, and the story more touching.” Other reviewers have echoed the sentiment, with many calling this adaptation one of the most faithful screen versions of Dickens’ novella—even though half the cast is made of felt.
Music, memory, and meaning.
Directed by Brian Henson (son of Jim Henson), the film marked his feature directorial debut and reflects deep respect for the Muppets' legacy. The original songs by Paul Williams—including “It Feels Like Christmas” and “Bless Us All”—have become holiday standards for many families.
Kermit plays “Bob Cratchett” and Robin-the-Frog stars as Tiny Tim.
More than three decades later, The Muppets Christmas Carol continues to resonate because it understands its assignment: make us laugh, remind us to be kinder, and maybe tear up just a little—especially when Tiny Tim enters the scene.
