Piseco Lake Ring of Flames Lights Up Labor Day Weekend

Campfires around an Adirondack Lake on Labor Day weekend.

Ring of Flames on Labor Day Weekend.

On Labor Day weekend, one of the Adirondacks’ quieter lakes puts on a show that needs no stage, sound system or fireworks permit.

The Piseco Lake Ring of Flames, held around the shoreline of Piseco Lake in the Central Adirondacks, returns Sunday, September 6, 2026, at dusk. This community event invites lakefront residents and visitors to light contained fires along the shore while boaters cruise the lake to watch the circle of flickering flames emerge against the darkness.

There are bigger Labor Day celebrations in the Adirondacks. Few, however, feel quite this Adirondack.

An Adirondack Labor Day tradition on Piseco Lake.

The Ring of Flames is wonderfully uncomplicated. No tickets, vendors or grandstands. Instead, people staying along Piseco Lake build a fire on their beach or in a fire pit as daylight fades.

One by one, points of orange begin appearing around the shoreline. Reflections shimmer across the darkening water, campfire smoke hangs in the cool evening air, and what began as individual fires gradually becomes a glowing necklace around the lake.

Visitors without lakefront fire pits can still take part in the experience. Boaters are encouraged to cruise Piseco Lake and enjoy the Ring of Flames from the water — arguably the best vantage point for appreciating the scale of the evening.

Why the Piseco Ring of Flames is worth seeing.

Part of the appeal is what the event doesn't have.

The Ring of Flames isn't a produced spectacle. It grows organically out of the camps, cottages and homes surrounding Piseco Lake, giving visitors a glimpse of the traditions that make Adirondack lake communities distinctive.

It also suits Piseco particularly well. Located in Hamilton County, roughly 10 miles south of Speculator, Piseco sits in a quieter corner of the Central Adirondacks, surrounded by forest and mountains. Nearby Lake Pleasant, Speculator and Wells make the area an appealing base for travelers looking for a Labor Day weekend that leans more toward lake time than traffic lights.

ADK Taste recommendation.

Arrive well before dusk and make an evening of it. Those heading onto Piseco Lake by boat should get situated while there is still daylight, then stay long enough to watch the shoreline transform as darkness settles in.

Boaters should slow down, use running lights and designate a sober operator. On a dark Adirondack lake filled with other people admiring the scenery, safe boating beats dramatic boating every time.

Public access points include Poplar Point and local boat launches. Because the fires are lit on private beaches and properties all around the shoreline, you can see the glowing ring best from a boat on the water or open public viewing areas along the lake

Anyone building a fire should keep it contained and fully extinguish it afterward. The event will be canceled if a fire ban is in effect.
