Seagle Festival Takes Center Stage With Statewide Opera Tour of Happy End

1920s speakeasy, the setting for Happy End a sharp, jazz-infused musical satire

Happy End is a sharp, jazz-infused satire set in a 1920s Chicago speakeasy.

In the Adirondacks, culture doesn’t just arrive—it’s cultivated. And this spring, Seagle Festival proves exactly why it remains one of the region’s most enduringly powerful artistic forces.

The Schroon Lake–based institution is stepping into the spotlight with a historic statewide collaboration, joining The Glimmerglass Festival, Opera Saratoga, and Finger Lakes Opera for a touring production of Happy End—the jazz-infused, sharp-edged musical satire by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht.

It’s a rare kind of collaboration. And for the Adirondacks, it’s something more: a reminder that world-class performance doesn’t just pass through here—it takes root.

A historic collaboration arrives in the Adirondacks.

Set against the smoky backdrop of a 1920s Chicago speakeasy, Happy End blends gangster grit with unexpected romance. At its core: a hardened criminal meets a Salvation Army missionary. What unfolds is equal parts satire, jazz, and social commentary—classic Brecht and Weill, with a modern twist.

Happy End is equal parts cabaret, opera, and theatrical spectacle.

This production brings together top-tier creative leadership. Direction comes from Mary Birnbaum of Opera Saratoga, while music direction is led by Rob Ainsley of The Glimmerglass Festival. The production also features a new English adaptation by dramaturg Kelley Rourke.

On stage, rising star Ana Karneža—winner of the prestigious 2024 Lotte Lenya Competition—leads a cast drawn from across the four partner companies. It’s a convergence of talent that reflects the strength of New York’s opera ecosystem.

And notably, it’s not confined to major metropolitan venues.

For Adirondack audiences, the tour makes a single, highly anticipated stop:

Spring in the Adirondacks tends to be a quieter cultural moment—mud season hikes, shoulder-season dining, and the slow return of warm-weather energy. That’s precisely what makes this performance stand out.

It offers a rare opportunity to experience a production of this caliber before the region’s summer arts season fully unfolds.

ADK Taste insight.

Founded in 1915, Seagle Festival is more than a performance venue—it’s a proving ground.

Opera performer on stage.

Top vocal talent collaborate to perform Happy End.

As the oldest vocal training program in the United States, it has shaped generations of professional singers. Many go on to perform on international stages, but their formative work often happens here, in the Adirondacks.

That dual identity—training ground and performance powerhouse—is what makes Seagle unique. It doesn’t just present art. It builds it.

This collaboration signals something bigger: a shift toward sustainable, cooperative touring models that expand access to opera beyond traditional urban centers.

In other words, the Adirondacks aren’t just part of the tour—they’re part of the future of how opera reaches audiences.

ADK Taste pick.

If there’s one reason to mark your calendar, it’s this:

You’re seeing tomorrow’s stars—today.

Seagle’s productions often feature artists on the cusp of major careers. Catching them in an intimate Adirondack setting, before they move on to larger stages, is part of the magic.

Add in a bold, rarely staged work like Happy End, and this becomes more than a night out—it’s a cultural moment.

ADK Taste recommendations.

  • Book early. Seating at Tannery Pond Community Center is limited, and interest in this collaboration is high.

  • Make it a night in North Creek. Pair the performance with dinner in town for a well-rounded evening.

  • Arrive early. Smaller venues mean fewer barriers between audience and artists—lean into that intimacy.

  • Explore more Seagle. Their summer season in Schroon Lake offers a deeper dive into opera and musical theater.

ADK Taste perspective.

There’s a certain expectation about where “serious” culture lives. Big cities. Grand halls. Formal institutions.

And then there’s the Adirondacks.

Here, a 100+ year-old opera program quietly trains world-class performers. Here, four major companies collaborate not in competition—but in shared purpose. Here, a jazz-infused Brechtian satire finds a stage just miles from forest trails and mountain lakes.

That contrast is the point.

Experiences like this remind us that the Adirondacks aren’t just a place to escape—they’re a place to discover. And sometimes, the most unexpected performances are the ones that stay with you longest.
