Northwood Cabins Wins AARCH 2025 Preservation Award

Exciting news for Tupper Lake and recent ADK Talks podcast guests, Brian and Renee Burns, owners of Northwood Cabins!
Adirondack Architectural Heritage (AARCH) recently announced that Northwood Cabins is a proud winner of a 2025 Preservation Award for Long-Term Stewardship.
Charming example of a bygone era.
Northwood Cabins, a captivating gem of mid-20th-century roadside architecture, is a unique blend of history and comfort. It captures the spirit of an era when automobile travel was the way to explore. As travelers hit the road, these delightful cabins became the perfect pit stop, offering a cozy place to rest and recharge.

The original neon sign on Route 30 outside Tupper Lake.
Initially set on Wawbeek Road, the cabins made their big move to Route 30 in the mid-1930s, thanks to the visionary LaPorte family. Arthur and Eva LaPorte transformed the cabins into a welcoming haven for visitors making their way into town, leaving a lasting legacy in the history of Tupper Lake.
With a kit house added on-site in 1940 to serve as the office, Northwood Cabins was all set to become a beloved destination—though it did close during World War II.
Northwood Cabins reopened in 1945 and has been greeting guests to the stunning Tri-Lakes region ever since. The LaPortes’ son even crafted an amazing neon sign to celebrate this revival.
Breathing new life into a beloved destination.
In 2016, Brian and Renee Burns took the helm of this historic property. They’ve been on a mission to preserve and refresh the cabins, replacing roofs, reconstructing floors, and updating bathrooms and kitchens, all while keeping the charm alive. Their dedication is evident in every corner of Northwood Cabins.

Modern amenities, vintage charm.
When the original neon sign couldn’t be salvaged, they commissioned a replica that keeps the nostalgic vibe shining bright. You can’t miss it as you travel into Tupper Lake on Route 30.
