A rare global arts experience in Lake Placid.

Kathak is one of the eight major forms of Indian classical dance, known for its intricate footwork, graceful spins, and expressive storytelling. In Kathak Unveiled, Barkha Patel guides audiences through the historical roots and artistic techniques that define the form.

The word “kathak” comes from kathakas, the traveling storytellers of ancient northern India who used dance, rhythm, and gesture to bring mythology and folklore to life. Over centuries, the form evolved from temple storytelling traditions into an elegant courtly art during the Mughal era.

Today, kathak remains both deeply traditional and dynamically modern—something Patel explores throughout the evening.

Understanding kathak: rhythm, storytelling, and artistry.

This immersive lecture-demonstration goes beyond simply watching a performance. Patel breaks down the structure of kathak so audiences can better understand what they see and hear.

Highlights include:

The historical lineage.
A concise journey through kathak’s transformation from devotional storytelling to a refined performance tradition embraced on global stages.

The architecture of rhythm.
Patel demonstrates the complex rhythmic patterns that form the backbone of kathak. Expect dazzling examples of tatkaar (footwork), chakkars (rapid pirouettes), and intricate mathematical compositions such as aamad, utthan, and parans.

The art of narrative.
Through abhinaya, or expressive storytelling, dancers use subtle facial expressions and symbolic hand gestures called mudras to convey emotion and narrative.

Contemporary musings.
Patel also discusses how modern choreographers are expanding kathak’s boundaries through abstraction, emotional exploration, and non-linear storytelling.

The program concludes with three solo works: two traditional pieces rooted in kathak technique and storytelling, followed by a contemporary interpretation.
