A history of tumult and bloody battles.
Crown Point State Historic Site is steeped in a rich history of warfare, primarily between the British and the French during the colonial era.
The site is strategically located in the Champlain Valley and was the scene of a significant military engagement. It began with the French construction of Fort St. Frederic between 1734 and 1737, which served as a base for attacks against British settlements.
In response, the British launched various expeditions to gain control of the area, ultimately succeeding in 1759 when they built "His Majesty's Fort of Crown Point." This fortification was one of the largest constructed by the British in North America, encompassing over seven acres.
An important battle site in the Revolution.
The site's military significance continued during the American Revolutionary War when, in 1775, American forces captured the fort and obtained crucial weaponry. General John Burgoyne's army later occupied Crown Point in 1777, maintaining British control until the war's end.
To participate in the tour, convene in front of the Crown Point Museum at 5:30 pm. The tour begins promptly, so please arrive on schedule.
We suggest participants wear suitable footwear and bring a flashlight. Tour capacity is limited, and slots will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. This is a free public event. Check the website and Facebook page for more information.
