The 21st Annual Lake Placid Marathon, Half Marathon, & 10K returns to Lake Placid on Sunday, June 14, 2026, bringing one of the Adirondacks’ most iconic endurance events back to the Olympic Village.

Starting on Main Street and weaving through the High Peaks region, this USATF-certified road race blends competitive spirit with classic Adirondack scenery—making it a standout early-season event for runners and spectators alike.

Set against the backdrop of the Adirondack Mountains, the race offers more than mileage—it delivers a full experience rooted in place, history, and community.

A destination race in the Adirondacks.

Each year, the Lake Placid Marathon draws runners from more than 40 states and multiple countries, including Canada and across Europe. It’s not just a race—it’s a destination. In fact, Runner’s World once ranked it among the top destination races in the United States.

Participants can choose from three distances—full marathon, half marathon, or 10K—making the event accessible to seasoned athletes, first-timers, and everyone in between. For those chasing big goals, the marathon is also a Boston Marathon qualifier.

A scenic Lake Placid course with Olympic roots.

The course begins in downtown Lake Placid before circling Mirror Lake, offering runners an immediate dose of mountain views and lakeside calm. From there, the route stretches outward past the ski jumps, the Lake Placid Horse Show Grounds, and along River Road beside the Ausable River.

Expect a mix of flat stretches, rolling hills, and a few challenging climbs—balanced by shaded sections, open vistas, and a steady rhythm of aid stations (26 for the marathon, 12 for the half).

The course is famously similar to the Ironman Lake Placid run route, adding a layer of prestige and familiarity for endurance athletes.

And then comes the finish.

Runners complete their race with a 400-meter lap around the James B. Sheffield Olympic Speedskating Oval—the same historic venue where Eric Heiden captured five gold medals during the 1980 Winter Olympics. It’s a finish line few races in the country can match.

What runners and spectators can expect.

This is a well-supported, thoughtfully organized event. Aid stations are frequent, the course is clearly marked, and the six-hour time limit offers flexibility for a wide range of runners.

At the finish, participants receive medals and access to food and refreshments. One of the more beloved traditions? A celebratory stop at the Lake Placid Pub & Brewery, where finishers can enjoy a complimentary LP 26.2 Ale with their bib.

For spectators, the event offers multiple vantage points—from the energy of Main Street to quieter stretches along River Road—making it easy to cheer on runners throughout the day.

ADK Taste recommendation.

Arrive early and claim a spot near Mirror Lake for the opening miles—this is where the field is still tight, the energy is high, and the Adirondack setting shines. For a memorable finish-line moment, head to the Olympic Oval before runners begin returning.

Why this race stands out in the Adirondacks.

There are plenty of road races. But few combine elite-level organization, Olympic history, and Adirondack scenery quite like this one.

With views of Whiteface Mountain and the surrounding High Peaks, runners aren’t just logging miles—they’re moving through one of the most celebrated landscapes in the Northeast.

It’s a race that feels distinctly Adirondack: challenging, beautiful, and deeply connected to place.
