Ahoy, Lake George: The Minne Ha Ha Sets Sail on a Pirate Adventure

Minne Ha Ha Steamboat on Lake George.

Labor Day Weekend on Lake George takes a decidedly swashbuckling turn when the Minne Ha Ha Pirate Adventure Cruise sets sail from the Lake George Steamboat Company on Saturday, September 5.

This one-hour family cruise through the southern Adirondacks combines a ride aboard Lake George’s iconic paddlewheeler with pirates, shoreline antics, cannon fire and a search for the suspiciously named Captain Long John Underwear.

Boarding begins at 2:45 pm, and the voyage departs at 3:15 pm from Steel Pier in Lake George Village, making it an easy addition to a Labor Day Weekend afternoon — particularly for families whose younger members appreciate a little mayhem with their sightseeing.

A pirate adventure on Lake George.

This is not the Minne Ha Ha’s usual sightseeing cruise.

Once aboard, passengers join the captain and crew in their quest for the elusive Captain Long John Underwear. The experience spills beyond the boat itself, with interactive fun involving homes along the shoreline and plenty of opportunities for aspiring pirates to practice their “ARRRRs.”

There is also cannon fire — loud cannon fire — which adds considerably to the nautical drama but is worth knowing about before bringing children who are sensitive to sudden noises.

Young pirates ages 0–11 receive a complimentary pirate-loot goodie bag. Additional bags can be purchased for $4, should an adult pirate feel unjustly deprived of treasure.

Even pirates require provisions.

The Minne Ha Ha has a small snack bar as well as a cocktail bar, where passengers can order Pirate Grog and other drinks during the cruise. Outside food and beverages are not permitted aboard.

There is also narration from the captain, although on this particular sailing, passengers should probably expect the storytelling to lean more toward high-seas hijinks than a quiet geography lesson.

A family-friendly Labor Day Weekend adventure.

The one-hour format suits families particularly well. It provides enough time to enjoy being out on Lake George without turning the outing into an all-afternoon commitment.

The setting supplies the Adirondack scenery almost effortlessly: lake breezes, mountain views and the shoreline of the Queen of American Lakes. The pirates simply make things considerably noisier.

Strollers are welcome, and the Minne Ha Ha is handicap accessible to the second deck. The vessel is also non-smoking and non-vaping.

ADK Taste recommendation.

Arrive well before sailing time. Boarding begins at 2:45 pm for the 3:15 pm departure, and Labor Day Weekend is rarely the moment to test Lake George Village traffic or parking karma.

Families may also want to leave time before or after the cruise to walk along Beach Road, explore Lake George Village or simply linger by the lake.
