June Squibb stars in “Eleanor the Great,” directed by Scarlett Johansson.
Indian Lake Theater is presenting “Eleanor the Great” from November 6 to 9. This film marks Scarlett Johansson's directorial debut and features a talented cast, including June Squibb (“About Schmidt,” “Nebraska,” “Meet Joe Black”), Erin Kellyman, Jessica Hecht, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
In this film, June Squibb vividly portrays the witty and charmingly troublesome 94-year-old Eleanor Morgenstein. After experiencing a devastating loss, Eleanor shares a story that begins to take on a life of its own. Scarlett Johansson's directorial debut is a comically poignant exploration of how the stories we hear can evolve into the stories we tell.
About “Eleanor the Great.”
Eleanor (June Squibb) is grieving the loss of her best friend and roommate of 12 years. To cope, she moves in with her daughter (Jessica Hecht) in New York City. Due to a mix-up, Eleanor ends up joining a group that meets regularly at the JCC. In her attempt to fit in, she falsely claims to have experienced the Holocaust story of her late best friend.
Eleanor's deception is eventually uncovered when her daughter reveals the truth, leading to embarrassment for their family and hurt feelings among her new friends at the JCC. One of these friends, a NYU student named Nina (Erin Kellyman), has grown close to Eleanor and is using her fabricated Holocaust story for a paper in her journalism class.
The situation escalates when Nina’s father, a newscaster played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, reports Eleanor’s story on local TV. He is also dealing with his own grief after the death of his wife and is trying to better understand both his loss and that of his daughter.
Praise for “Elinor the Great.”
Kristen Lopez, The Film Maven, commented, “This was a heartfelt, emotionally resonant story about the power of our lives and the capacity of our stories lingering on long after we've left this world. Take someone you love and see it.’
Washington Post film critic Sonia Rao wrote, “The film allows [Squibb] a complexity rarely afforded to elderly characters. She radiates warmth in scenes with Kellyman, serving as a wise and witty grandmotherly figure, and exhibits sharp comedic timing when playing opposite Jessica Hecht.”
“At nearly 100 years old, June Squibb is on a roll. Call it the Squibbaissance,” wrote Esther Zuckman of the Daily Beast.
