Veteran’s Day Weekend Screening: “Kelly’s Heroes”

An all-star cast headlines a part war movie, part comedy, part bank-job caper.

Donald Sutherland, Telly Savalas, Don Rickles and Clint Eastwood star in “Kelly’s Heroes.”

As a follow-up to Veterans’ Day, Indian Lake Theater presents "Kelly's Heroes” from November 13 to 16, 2025.

“Kelly's Heroes” is a 1970 war comedy-drama film set during World War II. The film tells the story of a motley crew of American GIs who go AWOL to rob a French bank, located behind German lines, of its stored Nazi gold bars.

The film stars Clint Eastwood and Telly Savalas, and co-stars Don Rickles, Carroll O'Connor, and Donald Sutherland providing the comic absurdity.

Secondary, comedic roles are played by Harry Dean Stanton, Gavin MacLeod, Karl-Otto Alberty, and Stuart Margolin.

Kelly’s Heroes: an unlikely group of role models.

The movie tells the tale of how an array of colorful American soldiers, in the midst of WWII, gets inside information from a drunk German officer about millions of dollars’ worth of gold hidden on enemy soil.

Kelly (Eastwood), a private with the platoon, devises a plan to sneak past the German officers to steal the loot for his crew. They recruit more men and set their plan into action. Despite several casualties, the men are determined to press forward, even if it means striking a deal with the opposing army.

British film and television writer Troy Kennedy Martin wrote the screenplay. He wrote the original “The Italian Job” (1969), and his last film was “Ferrari” (2023), which was posthumously released.

Part war movie, part comedy, part bank job caper, the elements combine seamlessly to produce a distinctive and memorable film.
