Return of an Army Brings 1776 to Life at Fort Ticonderoga
Fort Ticonderoga overlooking Lake Champlain in the Adirondacks.
The REAL TIME REVOLUTION® Signature Reenactment Event: Return of an Army returns to Fort Ticonderoga on the shores of Lake Champlain from July 3–5, 2026, inviting visitors to step directly into one of the most dramatic moments of the American Revolution.
As communities across the Adirondacks celebrate Independence Day, this immersive living-history event reveals what was unfolding nearly 350 miles from Philadelphia as the Declaration of Independence was being signed.
Instead of simply watching history, visitors become part of it. Continental soldiers arrive by wooden bateaux, cannon thunder across the historic fort, fifes and drums echo through the parade ground, and military surgeons battle a devastating smallpox epidemic—all recreated using meticulous historical research.

The summer of 1776 was anything but certain.
Fresh from a difficult retreat, the Northern Continental Army struggled to regroup at Fort Ticonderoga while British forces threatened from Canada. Soldiers built defenses, unloaded heavy artillery, cared for the wounded, and waited to learn whether the colonies would truly become a nation.
The REAL TIME REVOLUTION® initiative recreates those pivotal days with remarkable authenticity. Based on diaries, military records, and firsthand accounts, every demonstration, encampment, and military movement reflects conditions exactly as they unfolded 250 years ago.

What visitors can expect at Fort Ticonderoga.
Throughout the three-day event, history comes alive across the grounds.
Watch a flotilla of bateaux glide onto Lake Champlain carrying weary Continental soldiers. Witness artillery crews wrestle massive cannon ashore, then haul them toward the fortifications. Hear synchronized musket volleys and booming cannon fire during large-scale military reviews that shake the parade grounds.
Daily Fifes & Drums concerts at 12:30 pm provide the soundtrack that once directed armies across the battlefield, while interpreters explain how music served as an essential military language.

ADK Taste insight.
Most Americans picture the Declaration of Independence being celebrated in Philadelphia. Yet while delegates signed the document there, soldiers at Fort Ticonderoga were fighting to survive. Weeks later, the Declaration would finally be read to these troops, transforming them from colonial soldiers into defenders of an independent United States.
