Gilbert & Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance at the Seagle Festival
The Seagle Festival presents “The Pirates of Penzance.”
The Seagle Festival in Schroon Lake invites you to kick off your summer season with “The Pirates of Penzance,” a beloved classic that has graced stages from Broadway to Main Street.
Everyone can expect a swashbuckling good time filled with laughter. From memorable songs like "Poor wand’ring one" and "Oh, is there not one maiden breast" to the iconic "I am the very model of a modern Major-General," no one will leave the show without a catchy tune stuck in their head.
The story follows Frederic, who, after turning 21, is released from his apprenticeship to a group of tender-hearted pirates. He meets Mabel, one of the daughters of the bumbling Major-General Stanley, and they immediately fall in love.
However, Frederic discovers that he was born on February 29, meaning he celebrates his birthday only once every four years.
Frederic’s indenture states that he must remain with the pirates until his "twenty-first birthday," which technically means he has to serve for another 63 years.
Bound by a sense of duty to honor his commitment to the pirates, Frederic finds solace in knowing that Mabel has vowed to wait for him faithfully. Fortunately, the pirates' maid-of-all-work, Ruth, eventually reveals a fact that saves the day.
“The Pirates of Penzance” is the fifth collaboration between Gilbert and Sullivan, introducing the much-parodied "Major-General's Song."
