Classical music lovers in the Adirondacks will have the chance to experience an elegant afternoon of chamber music when “The Schumanns and The Mendelssohns” takes the stage at The Hyde Collection in Glens Falls on Saturday, March 7, 2026, from 3 pm to 4 pm.
Rachel Ruysch (Netherlands, 1664-1750), Floral Still Life, 1686, Oil on Canvas, Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester on display at The Hyde Collection.
This special concert pairs the expressive works of two remarkable musical families: husband-and-wife composers Robert and Clara Schumann, and the talented siblings Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn. The performance draws inspiration from The Hyde’s current exhibition, A Feast of Fruit and Flowers: Still Life Painters of the Seventeenth Century and Beyond, creating a thoughtful dialogue between visual art and music.
Acclaimed violinist Rolf Schulte and award-winning pianist Elżbieta Bilicka will perform a program of romantic-era pieces that highlight both the emotional depth and artistic brilliance of these composers. The event offers a rare opportunity to hear works that reflect both personal and familial musical connections—an ideal pairing for an afternoon at one of the Adirondack region’s most respected art institutions.
Inspired by art and musical partnerships.
The concert explores the artistic relationships that shaped some of the most beloved music of the nineteenth century.
Robert and Clara Schumann shared one of the most fascinating partnerships in classical music history. Robert’s compositions helped define the Romantic era, while Clara—herself a virtuosic pianist and composer—championed his work and created influential pieces of her own.
Meanwhile, Felix Mendelssohn remains widely celebrated for works like the Violin Concerto in E minor and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. His sister Fanny Mendelssohn, long overlooked in her time, has gained well-deserved recognition in recent years for her expressive piano works and songs.
By presenting music from both families, the program highlights the artistic bonds that shaped these composers’ creative lives while offering audiences a richly textured listening experience.
Featuring world-class musicians.
The performance brings together two internationally accomplished musicians whose careers span major concert halls and prestigious competitions.
German-born violinist Rolf Schulte, described by The New Yorker as “one of the most distinguished violinists of our day,” began playing violin at age five under his father’s guidance. His musical studies took him across Europe, including the Robert Schumann Institute in Düsseldorf, Yehudi Menuhin’s renowned summer course in Gstaad, Switzerland, and the Accademia Chigiana in Siena.
Schulte later moved to the United States to study with legendary violin pedagogue Ivan Galamian at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. At just 16 years old, he made his orchestral debut with the Philharmonia Hungarica in Cologne, performing Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto.
Throughout his distinguished career, Schulte has performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, Bamberg Symphony, and Orchestra del Teatro La Fenice in Venice. Today, he continues to explore the classical repertoire—from Beethoven and Brahms to Debussy and Stravinsky—bringing insights gained from decades of collaboration with contemporary composers. He performs on a remarkable 1780 Lorenzo Storioni violin crafted in Cremona.
Joining him is Elżbieta Bilicka, an award-winning pianist whose performances have earned international acclaim. Bilicka has taken first prize in numerous international competitions, including the G-clef International Competition in South Korea, the Walled City Competition in Ireland, and the Putra Competition in Malaysia. She has also received honors in the Olga Kern, Paderewski, and NIFC Chopin competitions.
Her performances as a concerto soloist and recitalist have taken her across Europe and the United States, with broadcasts on BBC Radio, Polish TV-Culture, and Central New York’s Classic FM. Her debut album, Lights and Shadows, released by Centaur Records, received praise from major classical publications including American Record Guide, Classical Sentinel, and Fanfare Magazine, which highlighted her “strong poetic streak.”
Bilicka holds degrees from the Feliks Nowowiejski Academy of Music in Poland, the Haute École de Musique in Geneva, and the Manhattan School of Music in New York. She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the CUNY Graduate Center.
