“The Odyssey” Brings Epic Adventure to Indian Lake Theater

The Odyssey movie.

The Odyssey offers a cinematic adventure in one of the Adirondacks' most beloved historic theaters.

Indian Lake Theater in Indian Lake, NY, brings Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” to the central Adirondacks this October, pairing a vast Mediterranean adventure with a community movie house.

The theater’s current ticket calendar lists screenings October 9–11, 2026: Friday and Saturday at 7 pm, and Sunday at 2 pm. For residents and travelers considering things to do in Indian Lake this weekend, the appeal extends beyond the film. An autumn outing can move from lakeside scenery to ancient mythology without surrendering the small-town pace.

Film synopsis.

The Trojan War has ended, but Odysseus still faces his hardest journey: getting home. The king of Ithaca crosses the Mediterranean with his soldiers, confronting dangerous waters, mythical creatures, and obstacles that test more than his strength.

Inspired by Homer’s epic, The Odyssey explores endurance, loyalty, and the distance between surviving a war and returning to the people who matter. Familiarity with Greek literature helps, but the central predicament needs little translation: home can feel impossibly far away.

Cast, director, and production notes.

Matt Damon plays Odysseus, with Tom Holland as his son, Telemachus, and Anne Hathaway as Penelope. Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron round out the prominent ensemble.

Nolan filmed The Odyssey entirely with IMAX film cameras, giving its landscapes and action an unusually ambitious visual foundation. That production choice helps explain the film’s theatrical appeal; viewers should expect a conventional cinema presentation at Indian Lake Theater.

Critical response, awards, and why it matters now.

Released in July, “The Odyssey” offers Indian Lake a chance to catch a summer release—or revisit it with fewer distractions than a living-room screening allows.

Rotten Tomatoes’ critical consensus emphasizes the film’s sweeping scale, ensemble performances, and human emotion. The reception also includes reservations: Inverse critic Hoai-Tran Bui praises its spectacle while finding that the lengthy running time loses momentum in the middle.

At approximately 2 hours and 52 minutes, this is an evening’s main event. Its themes of family, responsibility, and the consequences of conflict give the spectacle something to consider afterward.

Trojan horse

A community cinema with its own story.

Indian Lake Theater occupies a 1937 movie house that reopened in 2008 after a community fundraising effort. Its 250-seat auditorium now serves films, concerts, and theater productions—a gathering place sustained by people across the central Adirondacks. That history makes it a fitting choice for thoughtful moviegoing. Small-town movie theaters offer a connection to place that a megaplex rarely supplies. Here, a ticket also supports the continuing cultural life of Indian Lake.
