The Adirondack Boreal Birding Festival returns to Hamilton County in the central Adirondacks from June 4–7, 2026, offering a four-day immersive birding event anchored by programs at the Adirondack Experience Museum on Blue Mountain Lake and guided outings across the region.

This annual festival invites birders of all levels to explore one of the Northeast’s richest boreal habitats through hikes, paddles, safaris, and expert-led seminars.

Set against more than one million acres of protected Adirondack wilderness, the festival unfolds across communities including Long Lake, Indian Lake, Speculator, Blue Mountain Lake, Inlet, and beyond—places where the forest still feels as vast as the sky overhead.

A premier Adirondacks birding experience.

Hamilton County is, quite simply, birding country. With more than 60% of its land classified as wilderness or wild forest, it offers rare access to boreal species typically found much farther north.

June is peak breeding season, when migratory birds have returned, and the woods hum with activity. Expect sightings—and more often, songs—of Blackburnian Warblers, Canada Jays, Boreal Chickadees, and, if luck and patience align, the elusive Bicknell’s Thrush.

Our newsletter,In Good Taste, is your weekly guide to Adirondack stories, food, and events—exactly the kind of insider perspective that leads you to weekends like this.

This is not a stand-and-wait kind of festival. It moves—often at dawn.

The schedule reads like a field guide in motion. Early risers can join a 6 am driving safari along Massawepie Road, where bog boardwalks and wetlands offer prime viewing for warblers and sparrows.

More adventurous participants might paddle Round Lake for a water-level perspective on loons, herons, and raptors, or hike into the Massawepie Mire, New York’s largest bog and a designated Important Bird Area.

Other highlights include:

  • A guided hike up Blue Mountain in search of Bicknell’s Thrush at an elevation

  • Railbed walks through wetlands in Minerva and Raquette Lake

  • Driving safaris through Perkins Clearing and Sabattis Circle Road

  • A presentation and reception at the Adirondack Experience Museum (Saturday at 4 pm)

Each outing is led by experienced naturalists and licensed guides, including well-known Adirondack birding experts like Joan Collins and Laurie Freeman.

Why Hamilton County is ideal for boreal birding.

There’s a reason birders travel from across the country for this event.

Hamilton County’s elevation, dense spruce-fir forests, and mosaic of wetlands create the perfect conditions for boreal species. It’s one of the few places in the lower 48 where you can reliably encounter birds typically associated with Canada.

And then there’s the setting itself: quiet dirt roads, mirror-like lakes, and forests that seem to stretch indefinitely. Birding here feels less like a checklist and more like a return to something elemental.

What to know before you go.

This is the Adirondacks—predictable in beauty, unpredictable in weather.

Participants should come prepared with layers, waterproof footwear, insect protection (black flies are part of the story), and the usual birding essentials: binoculars, field guides, and a healthy sense of curiosity.

Each outing requires registration, with a per-trip fee, and space is limited for many excursions, so register now to reserve your spot.

Affordable lodging is available throughout the region, making it easy to turn a single outing into a long weekend.
