“The Penguin Lessons” at Indian Lake Theater
A heartwarming comedy-drama starring Steve Coogan and Jonathan Pryce.
Directed by Peter Cattaneo, “The Penguin Lessons" is a heartwarming comedy-drama inspired by Tom Michell’s memoir and stars Steve Coogan.
Set in 1976 Argentina during political unrest, the film follows British schoolteacher Tom Michell, who embarks on a transformative journey after rescuing a penguin from an oil spill.
Naming the penguin Juan Salvador, Tom brings him back to the elite boys' school where he teaches, leading to unexpected changes in his personal life and the school community.
As Tom integrates Juan Salvador into his classroom, the penguin becomes a catalyst for engaging his previously indifferent students, fostering a renewed sense of purpose and connection. The narrative delicately balances lighthearted moments with the backdrop of Argentina's political turmoil, exploring themes of personal growth, empathy, and the impact of unlikely friendships.

While the film touches on the era's political tensions, it primarily focuses on the uplifting bond between Tom and Juan Salvador, offering an amusing and poignant story.
“The Penguin Lessons” is well-suited for audiences who appreciate character-driven stories that blend humor with emotional depth. Fans of films like “Dead Poets Society” or “The Holdovers” will find resonance in its themes of transformation and the power of unconventional relationships.
Steve Coogan delivers a performance that captures both the dry wit and the evolving warmth of his character, supported by a strong ensemble cast. The film's gentle humor and touching narrative offers a comforting and reflective viewing experience.
The film premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival on 6 September 2024, before being released in cinemas in the US and UK on 28 March and 18 April 2025 respectively.
