As Independence Day approaches, Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness arrives at Indian Lake Theater on Thursday, July 2 at 7 pm, bringing an original live theatrical production to one of the Central Adirondacks' most beloved cultural venues. Presented by Gem Radio Theatre, the performance commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence through the authentic words of the people who helped shape a nation.

Experience America's founding through original voices.

Written by Adirondack essayist Edward Collins, Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness draws on more than 125 archival documents to tell the story of America's founding through the eyes of those who experienced it firsthand.

Rather than relying on modern interpretation, the production lets Revolutionary-era voices speak for themselves. Through the memories of Revolutionary War veteran Andrus Wever—who later founded nearby Wevertown—audiences encounter both iconic figures and lesser-known patriots whose convictions helped shape the young republic.

Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Abigail Adams, Patrick Henry, and Thomas Paine share the stage with Mercy Otis Warren, Sarah Bradlee Fulton, Polly Cooper of the Oneida Nation, Catherine Macaulay, and Crispus Attucks, creating a fuller picture of America's revolutionary story.

Indian Lake Theater continues its tradition of bringing exceptional arts to the Adirondacks.

Few venues are better suited to this production than Indian Lake Theater.

For decades, the restored historic theater has served as a cultural gathering place for residents and visitors alike, hosting independent films, live music, guest speakers, community events, and theatrical performances that might otherwise never reach the Central Adirondacks.

That mission makes Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness feel perfectly at home here—an evening where history, storytelling, and community come together under one roof.

ADK Taste insight.

One of the production's most compelling qualities is its Adirondack perspective.

By framing the Revolution through the lens of Andrus Wever, whose post-war life became intertwined with today's Johnsburg region, the production reminds audiences that America's founding wasn't confined to Philadelphia or Boston.

Its legacy extended into the mountain communities that would eventually become the Adirondacks.

That local connection gives the performance an intimacy that national commemorations often lack.

ADK Taste recommendation.

Plan to arrive a little early and enjoy downtown Indian Lake before the performance. Grab dinner nearby, then settle into one of the Adirondacks' most welcoming theaters for an evening that pairs beautifully with the region's Independence Day celebrations.

If you're spending the holiday weekend in Blue Mountain Lake, Long Lake, Speculator, or Newcomb, this performance makes an easy and worthwhile evening excursion.

Who should attend?

History buffs will appreciate the extensive archival research that went into the script, while theater lovers will enjoy Gem Radio Theatre's engaging storytelling style.

The performance is equally appealing for families, seasonal visitors, and anyone looking for a thoughtful way to commemorate America's Semiquincentennial beyond the usual holiday festivities.
