The Strand Theatre in Old Forge is Part Cinema, Part Time Machine
The Strand Theater in the center of Old Forge.
A movie at The Strand Theatre in Old Forge begins well before the lights dim.
The experience starts in the lobby, where vintage cameras, projectors, film equipment, old popcorn machines and decades of cinematic ephemera compete for attention. The collection gives the place the feel of an eccentric little movie museum—except this museum also sells popcorn, screens first-run films and remains very much alive.

The Strand occupies a rare position in the Adirondacks. It offers the familiar pleasure of catching a new release on a rainy afternoon, after a day on the trails or during a family vacation. At the same time, it preserves an era when going to the movies felt like an occasion rather than another subscription service.
In a region known for preserving great camps, historic hotels and beloved general stores, The Strand protects a different piece of Adirondack life: the small-town movie house.
A century of movies in Old Forge.
The Strand opened in 1923, when silent films still ruled the screen. The building also accommodated a dance hall and a barbershop at different points in its history, serving as a community gathering place as much as a theater.
Its present story took shape in 1991, when Bob Card visited Old Forge while managing sound for a band. During his downtime, he attempted to see a movie at The Strand. The theater needed a minimum audience of 10 people before it would run the film, so Card went onto the street and recruited enough moviegoers to make the screening happen.
While waiting for the film, he mentioned how much he liked the theater. The person selling tickets asked whether he liked it enough to buy it.
Apparently, that was not entirely a rhetorical question.
The rejuvenated Strand in Old Forge.
Card returned home and told Helen Zyma that he wanted to purchase a theater in Old Forge. She reportedly questioned his sanity, visited the building and then fell for it too. The couple bought The Strand and began the long process of bringing it back to life.
ADK Taste insight.
The restoration involved more than fresh paint and a reverent nod to history.
Card and Zyma removed dropped ceilings, repaired the lobby and restored the original auditorium. Its historic seats were dismantled, shipped away for refurbishment and later reinstalled. In 2000, they expanded the theater from one screen to four, allowing The Strand to offer several movies rather than showing the same film for weeks at a time.
The theater later faced another expensive transition as movie distribution moved from film reels to digital formats. Community fundraising and a state grant helped The Strand install digital projectors in all four auditoriums in 2014.
That combination of preservation and adaptation explains much of the theater’s charm. The Strand does not treat history as something to rope off and admire from a safe distance. It puts the past to work.
The main auditorium received an Art Deco redesign during the 1930s, and much of its period character remains. Meanwhile, contemporary digital equipment keeps the newest movies playing on the screens.
History of Old Forge’s Strand Theater.
The lobby may steal the show.
Card began collecting cameras in the 1980s, and The Strand gave that collection room to grow—considerably.
Today, cameras and filmmaking equipment appear throughout the building. Visitors may find projectors, editing equipment, film reels, posters and objects from several generations of moviegoing. Some patrons reportedly stop in simply to look around.
The displays feel personal rather than professionally staged. That is part of the appeal. The Strand resembles the collection of an enthusiastic cinephile who happened to acquire an entire theater and wisely decided that blank walls were a wasted opportunity.
It rewards looking up, looking around and arriving early.
The Strand’s lobby doubles as a film museum.
ADK Taste pick.
The essential order is the popcorn.
The Strand’s vintage popcorn machines are not merely decorative. Machines dating to 1947 and 1953 were still operating when the theater celebrated its centennial, with Card crediting their kettle design and heat distribution for the quality of the finished product.
The popcorn has become enough of an Old Forge attraction that movie tickets are optional: The Strand sells it to go. The theater’s official website actively encourages passersby to stop in for a bag.
That makes popcorn the practical choice for anyone returning to a cabin, rental or campsite after an afternoon in town. It also raises the intriguing possibility that one can visit a movie theater solely for snacks and call it cultural tourism.
ADK Taste fully supports this interpretation.
ADK Taste recommendations.
Check The Strand’s official website shortly before visiting. The schedule changes with current releases, and the site provides the latest films, showtimes and captioned screenings.
Antique cameras and projectors.
The theater operates year-round and generally opens its doors about 30 minutes before the first show.
It does not sell advance tickets for regular movies and does not accept credit cards, although an ATM is available in the lobby.
The building is accessible, and open-caption screenings appear on the schedule throughout the year.
Arrive early enough to explore the memorabilia rather than hurrying directly into the auditorium. Visitors particularly interested in historic cameras may need more lobby time than expected.
The Strand is located at 3093 State Route 28 in Old Forge, placing it conveniently along the village’s main commercial corridor. It fits easily into a day that might also include Old Forge Hardware, View Arts Center, the Fulton Chain of Lakes or a drive through nearby Inlet.
And take the popcorn recommendation seriously. Even those without time for a movie can stop for a bag to go.
ADK Taste perspective.
The Strand matters because it remains both useful and unusual.
It is not a preserved theater that opens occasionally for tours. Nor is it a modern multiplex decorated with a few nostalgic posters. It is a working, independently operated cinema where the newest releases share space with the machinery and memories of moviegoing’s first century.
Card and Zyma did more than restore an old building. They preserved a social ritual: buying a ticket at the box office, choosing something from the concession stand, settling into a dark auditorium and experiencing a story with a roomful of other people.
In the Adirondacks, where weather can rewrite a day’s itinerary without consulting anyone, The Strand also provides one of Old Forge’s most appealing backup plans.
Frankly, it may deserve to be the original plan.

The wind up on Whiteface Mountain can be as unpredictable as life itself. You need something that shows that you can handle both with equal grace. Enter the Adirondack Rider, a sweatshirt hoodie that's more than just fabric—it's a statement.
Crafted from 100% ring-spun US cotton, it's as soft as the first snowfall and just as durable. The relaxed fit gives you room to move, whether cruising around town or warming up by the lodge fire. But it's not just about comfort. This hoodie is made with care—sustainable, environmentally friendly production methods ensure it leaves as little trace as you do in the forever wild Adirondack Park.
And then there's the design: a subtle yet striking tribute to the thrill of snowboarding in the Adirondack Mountains.
