Ebenezer Scrooge the main character in A Christmas Carol.

This special adaptation by Philip Grecian, based on Charles Dickens’s beloved novel, is directed by Ginene Mason and Amy Fitts, and features a talented cast of Depot Theatre Academy alums and local artists. Together, they re-create Dickens’s London using voices, sound effects, and imagination—no elaborate sets required.

What makes a radio play so magical?

Experiencing an old-fashioned radio play.

Experience the magic of old-time radio theater.

Attending a radio play is part performance, part time travel. Actors perform at microphones, often switching roles in real time. At the same time, Foley artists create sound effects live—footsteps crunch through imaginary snow, doors creak open, and ghostly winds howl with nothing more than clever props and perfect timing.

For the audience, it’s a deeply immersive experience. Without sets or costumes to dictate every detail, listeners are invited to paint the world themselves. Scrooge’s counting house, the warmth of the Cratchit home, and the eerie visits from the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future unfold vividly in the mind’s eye. It’s intimate, cozy, and wonderfully nostalgic—perfect for the holiday season.

A story that still resonates.

This radio-style adaptation captures all the humor, heart, and moral clarity that have made A Christmas Carol endure for generations. Scrooge’s journey from isolation to generosity feels especially meaningful when shared in a communal setting, surrounded by neighbors and friends. The themes of compassion, community care, and second chances align beautifully with the spirit of the Adirondacks.

Supporting local arts—and local needs.

Admission to the performance is free to ensure accessibility for all, and donations are gratefully accepted to benefit local food pantries.

Traditional christmas tree.

Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol has been a holiday tradition since Victorian times.

By attending, you’re not only supporting local artists and young performers from the Depot Theatre Academy—you’re also helping ensure that neighbors in need have support during the holiday season. It’s a wonderful reminder that small community gatherings can have a big impact.

New for 2025: live stream option.

In an exciting first, this year’s performance will also be live-streamed, allowing audiences beyond the Adirondacks to tune in and share in the experience. Whether you attend in person at the Grange Hall or watch from home, this cherished holiday tradition is expanding its reach while staying rooted in community values. (Streaming details will be announced soon.)

Make it part of your holiday plans.

Arrive early to enjoy refreshments, mingle with fellow theatergoers, and soak up the festive atmosphere before the performance begins. Consider pairing your visit with shopping or dining at nearby local businesses to make a full afternoon of community support.

If you’re looking for a meaningful, feel-good holiday outing that blends art, tradition, and generosity, A Christmas Carol: A Radio Play is a perfect fit.
