Light the Longest Night: Winter Solstice Luminaria Walk
Celebrate the turning of the season in the Adirondack woods in Wadhams, NY.
The Winter Solstice marks the shortest day and longest night of the year — a moment that cultures around the world have honored for thousands of years as a time of reflection, renewal, and the quiet promise that the light will return.
This year, Champlain Area Trails invites the community to celebrate that ancient turning point with a Winter Solstice Luminaria Walk, a magical, family-friendly evening at the Twin Valleys Outdoor Education Center, 95 Twin Valley Rd, Wadhams, NY 12993.
Set against the peaceful landscape of Wadhams, NY, this self-guided luminaria walk (or snowshoe, weather permitting) offers a gentle way to welcome winter, connect with nature, and savor the glow of lantern-lit trails at dusk.
What to expect on the luminaria walk.
Guests are invited to arrive anytime between 4 and 8 pm, when the trails will be illuminated with softly glowing luminarias. The experience is designed to be relaxed and accessible, with shorter, well-lit trails that wind through winter woods and open up to beautiful views of the pond, especially striking at twilight.
Whether you stroll quietly, snowshoe beneath the stars, or bring the kids along for an early evening adventure, the atmosphere is meant to be calm, welcoming, and a little bit magical.
To warm up, gather around the bonfire, where guests can roast marshmallows, share stories, and soak in the simple joy of being outdoors on a winter night. This event is truly winter fun for all ages, making it a wonderful option for families, couples, and anyone looking to mark the solstice in a meaningful way.
Why the winter solstice matters.
Across cultures and centuries, the Winter Solstice has symbolized rebirth, hope, and the triumph of light over darkness. From ancient stone circles to modern candlelit traditions, people have long gathered on this night to pause, reflect, and look ahead.
A luminaria walk captures that spirit beautifully. Each glowing light along the trail serves as a reminder that even on the darkest night of the year, warmth, community, and light are never far away — especially in the Adirondacks.
