Celebrate America’s 250th with “1776” at Tannery Pond Center in North Creek

For Adirondack residents and visitors looking for a thoughtful way to celebrate Independence Day, Tannery Pond Center in North Creek offers a patriotic alternative to parades and fireworks.

On Saturday, July 4, at 2 pm, the community arts center will screen the beloved musical film 1776, followed by a special presentation from local historian and author Glenn L. Pearsall.

Part movie, part history lesson, and entirely fitting for America’s 250th birthday, this event combines entertainment and education in one of the Adirondacks’ most welcoming cultural venues.

A witty and musical look at the birth of a nation.

Based on the award-winning Broadway musical, 1776 dramatizes the tense political debates that unfolded in Philadelphia during the summer of 1776 as the Continental Congress wrestled with the question of independence from Great Britain.

Rather than focusing on battlefield heroics, the film brings viewers inside the meeting rooms where history was made. John Adams pushes relentlessly for independence, Benjamin Franklin offers wit and diplomacy, and Thomas Jefferson struggles to complete the document that would change the course of history.

Filled with memorable songs, sharp dialogue, and surprising humor, 1776 transforms a familiar chapter of American history into an engaging and highly entertaining story.

William Daniels, Howard da Silva and Ken Howard star in 1776.

A Broadway classic brought to the screen.

Released in 1972 and directed by Peter H. Hunt, 1776 stars William Daniels as John Adams, alongside Howard da Silva as Benjamin Franklin, Donald Madden as John Dickinson, Ken Howard (aka the White Shadow) as Thomas Jefferson, and Blythe Danner in one of her earliest film roles.

One of the film’s most fascinating details is that portions of the dialogue and lyrics were drawn directly from letters, memoirs, and historical records of the actual participants in the Second Continental Congress. While the story takes creative liberties, it remains one of the most distinctive and entertaining depictions of the nation’s founding.

Why the film still resonates today.

Critics and audiences have long praised 1776 for making a complex political moment accessible, lively, and unexpectedly funny. The performances remain strong more than five decades after the film’s release, and the musical score continues to win fans among history buffs and theater lovers alike.

Some modern viewers note that the film simplifies certain historical realities and reflects the storytelling conventions of its era. Yet even those critiques reinforce why the film remains worth revisiting: it invites conversation about how Americans remember and interpret their history.

As the nation marks its 250th anniversary, 1776 feels especially timely. It serves as both a celebration of the ideals behind the Declaration of Independence and a reminder that democracy has always involved spirited debate, compromise, and competing visions for the future.

A special presentation by Glenn Pearsall.

Adding a distinctly Adirondack dimension to the afternoon, Johnsburg historian Glenn L. Pearsall will introduce the film and deliver a post-screening talk exploring what became of the Declaration’s signers after 1776.

Pearsall is well known throughout the region for his extensive work documenting Adirondack history. His books, including Echoes in These Mountains and When Men and Mountains Meet, have helped generations of readers better understand the people and events that shaped the Adirondack Park.

His presentation promises to add fascinating historical context to the film while connecting national history to local curiosity and scholarship.
