The Art of Irish Road Bowling in the Central Adirondacks
Indian Lake’s popular St. Patrick’s Day event is back.
Irish road bowling in Indian Lake.
The Indian Lake Irish Road Bowling event began in 2006 and has grown from 20 players to over 200. The game is played on a country road with various obstacles, such as turns, inclines, and ruts, to make it more challenging. The road is open to traffic, which has the right of way. Therefore, players must stop playing and let any vehicles pass.
Teams of four players compete, with two teams playing at a time. Each player takes a turn rolling the bullet, an iron ball about the size of a bocce ball. All players must use an underhanded roll. After player one rolls on each team, all players move forward with their team to where the bullet stopped. Player 2 then takes a turn rolling from that spot, and so on. After the first two teams have cleared the play area, the following two teams are brought forward to begin play, much like teeing off at golf.
Each roll is counted, and the team with the least amount of rolls when they arrive at the finish line is declared the winner. In the event of a tie, the last roll of play is measured, and the registration that has gone the farthest after the finish line wins the tie.
This fun event also includes music, a 50/50 raffle, and food, which is available for purchase. The teams will bowl snow, rain or shine, so dress appropriately.
