ADK Film Presents the Critically Hailed “All We Imagine As Light”

Adirondack Film brings the winner of the Grand Prize at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival to Lake Placid.
Adirondack Film presents a unique selection of films in their "See Something That Means Something" series. The hope is that these films bring together the Adirondack community of film enthusiasts to enjoy experiences that inspire thought and conversation.
On May 23 they will screen “All We Imagine as Light,” an acclaimed film from India.
Writer/director Payal Kapadia explores and celebrates the light, lives, and textures of contemporary, working-class Mumbai. Her revelatory fiction feature debut won the Grand Prize at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
Centering on two roommates who also work together in a city hospital--head nurse Prabha (Kani Kusruti) and recent hire Anu (Divya Prabha)--plus their coworker, cook Parvaty (Chhaya Kadam), Kapadia's film alights on moments of connection and heartache, hope and disappointment. Prabha, her husband from an arranged marriage and living in faraway Germany, is courted by a doctor at her hospital.
Anu carries on a romance with a Muslim man, which she must keep a secret from her strict Hindu family; Parvaty finds herself dealing with a sudden eviction from her apartment.

Adirondack Film presents compelling films as part of their “See Something That Means Something” series.
Kapadia captures the bustle of the metropolis and the open-air tranquility of a seaside village with equal radiance, articulated by her superb actresses and by the camera with a lyrical naturalism that occasionally drifts into dreamlike incandescence.
Critical acclaim for “All We Imagine as Light.”
The movie has received widespread accolades. It was the first Indian film to receive the prestigious Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival and garnered numerous nominations from organizations like BAFTA, Golden Globes, and Independent Spirit Awards.
Peter Travers, film critic for ABC News, wrote “In her first fiction feature, documentarian Payal Kapadia brings a poetic profundity to this cinematic spellbinder about female sisterhood in a big city (Mumbai) full of societal, economic and political pressures that can force out intimacy and dreams.”
New York Times critic, Manohla Dargis, wrote, “‘All We Imagine as Light’ is a drama about life’s fragility, but it’s also about nurturance. That may sound as precious as a homily straight out of Sundance, but it’s just the reverse.”
All We Imagine as Light is a soulful study of the transformative power of friendship and sisterhood, in all its complexities and richness.
