Where in the ADK? Camp Santanoni
Want to see one of the ADK’s iconic Great Camps in winter? You gotta work for it.
This week’s “Where in the ADK?” comes from the town of Newcomb in the Central Adirondacks region. But to say that Camp Santanoni is “near” Newcomb is dealing with alternative facts.
In reality, the spectacular Santanoni Great Camp Complex sits within the 13,000-acre Santanoni Preserve. The most visible evidence of Santanoni is its gatehouse (pictured in this week’s clue). To reach the camp, it’s a five-mile trek in and back (that’s 10 miles round-trip if you’re doing the math). In our opinion, however, it’s well worth the effort.
During warmer weather months, visitors have the option to take a horse-drawn wagon instead of hiking. However, in winter, the only way to reach Santanoni is by snowshoes or x-country skis.
As luck (and clever content scheduling) would have it, this weekend is one of Santanoni’s winter weekends. If you’re up for the trek, you will be rewarded with guides from Adirondack Architectural Heritage, who will provide insights into the property and its history. Check out the details for Santanoni Winter Weekend on February 18 and 19.
