As St. Patrick’s Day approaches in the Adirondacks, communities across the region lean into the joyful traditions of Irish music, dance, and storytelling. One event capturing that festive spirit is the Winter Coffeehouse Concert featuring Hudson River Céilí, a lively evening of Celtic music and dance that celebrates the heart of Irish cultural tradition.

More than a typical concert, this performance invites audiences to experience a true céilí—the Irish word for a spirited gathering filled with music, dance, and community.

For those seeking authentic St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the Adirondacks, this cozy winter concert offers an engaging blend of traditional music, storytelling, and high-energy dance.

What a céilí means in Irish tradition.

In Ireland, a céilí (pronounced kay-lee) is more than a performance. It’s a communal celebration where music, dancing, and friendship take center stage.

Hudson River Ceili embraces that tradition fully. The ensemble performs a rich mix of Irish, Québecois, and New England dance tunes, along with classic Celtic songs and spirited instrumental pieces. The music often builds into lively sets designed to inspire foot tapping—and occasionally even spontaneous dancing.

The group formed out of long-standing musical friendships. Members first crossed paths more than two decades ago at Parting Glass pan-Celtic jam sessions, informal gatherings where traditional musicians shared tunes late into the night. In 2020, they officially formed Hudson River Céilí to bring their shared love of Irish musical arts to audiences across the Hudson Valley and beyond.

Today, the group performs at festivals, concerts, and contra dances throughout the region.

The band features four experienced performers who each bring a deep love of traditional Celtic music.

Andre Ernst handles vocals and guitar, as well as bouzouki, banjo, and mandolin. A longtime musician from New York’s Capital District, Ernst blends storytelling vocals with rich instrumental arrangements that anchor the group’s sound.

Leanne adds both musical and visual energy to the performance. She plays bodhrán and tin whistles while also performing Irish step dance. She has studied Irish dance for more than twelve years and has competed locally and in regional championships with the Boland School of Irish Dance.

David Jones contributes fiddle and concertina, instruments that sit at the heart of many traditional Celtic tunes. He is also a member of the Galloway Gaelic Pipes and Drums, bringing a strong connection to the broader Celtic music tradition.

Diane Jones rounds out the ensemble with fiddle and mandolin, creating the layered melodies and harmonies that give the group its lively sound.

Together, the musicians create an atmosphere that feels both authentic and welcoming—true to the communal spirit of a traditional céilí.

What visitors can expect at the Tannery Pond Center Winter Coffeehouse Concert.

The Winter Coffeehouse Concert format offers a relaxed and intimate way to enjoy traditional music. Unlike large festival stages, a coffeehouse performance allows audiences to experience the music up close while enjoying a warm community atmosphere.

Expect fast-paced fiddle tunes, Irish ballads, Celtic instrumentals, and spirited dance performances throughout the evening. Between songs, musicians often share stories about the music’s origins, adding cultural context that deepens the experience.

For anyone who loves traditional folk music—or enjoys celebrating St. Patrick’s season—the concert offers an authentic taste of Celtic culture in the Adirondacks.

Why this event is unique to the Adirondacks.

While large St. Patrick’s parades and pub celebrations often grab headlines, smaller cultural gatherings like this coffeehouse concert capture a different side of Adirondack life.

The region has long embraced folk traditions, community music sessions, and storytelling gatherings. Events like the Winter Coffeehouse Concert continue that legacy, creating spaces where musicians and audiences share the experience.

It’s a reminder that the Adirondacks—much like rural Ireland—value community gatherings built around music and shared traditions.
