Our recommendations on places to experience the 2024 Solar Eclipse.
Every few years, the universe treats earthlings to a breathtaking solar eclipse. Witnessing this event in one’s backyard is a once-in-a-lifetime experience coveted by astronomy enthusiasts.
Such is the case with the Great North American 2024 Solar Eclipse. Lucky for us, the Adirondack Mountains provide a unique and awe-inspiring vantage point from which to view this cosmic spectacle.
Viewing the 2024 Solar Eclipse in Upstate New York
The Adirondack Park, a sprawling expanse that covers over six million acres, is a diverse landscape featuring dense forests, crystal-clear lakes, and majestic peaks. This vast wilderness offers an unparalleled setting for witnessing the awe-inspiring spectacle of a solar eclipse.
As we prepare for this celestial event, the question arises: where within this expansive wilderness should we position ourselves to ensure the most extraordinary and unforgettable viewing experience?
Fortunately, the Adirondack Park offers many excellent options.
Tri-Lakes & High Peaks Region
Lake Placid•Saranac Lake • Tupper Lake • Paul Smith’s.
The region is squarely in the Path of Totality for the 2024 Solar Eclipse. Towns in the area will host events starting the day before the Eclipse and all day long on the Big Day.

The Central Adirondacks is another popular destination for viewing the Total Solar Eclipse. Towns like Indian Lake and Old Forge have organized events all weekend long.
Gore Mountain and Schroon Lake Region
North Creek • Chestertown • Schroon Lake
While not every town in the Gore Mountain and Schroon Lake region will undergo 100% totality, most will experience more than 99.1%, which is good enough for us.
One of the best places to see the Total Solar Eclipse in the area is Gore Mountain Ski Resort in North Creek. The ski resort is within the Path of Totality and plans to be open for skiing on Elipse day (if the snow holds out).
Please note: for the safety of patrons, ski lifts and trails will close at the beginning of the Eclipse.
Lake Champlain and Adirondack Coast
Ticonderoga • Crown Point • Essex • Westport
The northeastern Adirondacks will also experience 100% totality. Visit Essex, NY, to enjoy the eclipse on the shores of scenic Lake Champlain.
Eclipse: safety first
Wherever you choose to observe the eclipse in the Adirondacks, make sure you prioritize safety precautions. That means taking care of your eyesight. Viewing the sun directly, even during an eclipse, can cause permanent eye damage.
It’s crucial to use proper eye protection, such as solar eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers. Also, never look at the sun through unfiltered cameras, telescopes, or binoculars, as this can cause severe eye injury.
The Adirondack Mountains offer many options for experiencing the awe-inspiring phenomenon of a solar eclipse. Across the Park’s 6 million acres, there is a perfect spot for everyone to witness the celestial dance of the sun and moon. So pack your eclipse glasses, venture north, and prepare to be mesmerized by nature's grand spectacle.
